adenoid/ear tubes advice needed

DD (who is 4) has to have her adenoids removed as well as tubes in both ears.  If you (or someone you know) when through this with their LO, I would appreciate any advice.  I am especially concerned about how to prepare her for this as well as how the recovery will be.  She has had anesthesia before when she was 3 (she was put out for an MRI), but I know she doesn't remember.  I remember her crying and confused after waking up, and she also got vomited, despite the meds they gave her (I have the same reaction to anesthesia).  Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated.  TIA!

Re: adenoid/ear tubes advice needed

  • DD had this done last year when she was 4. We told her she was going to the  doctor and they were going to help her sleep and fix her ears while she was sleeping. We had it done at Children's Hospital here in Columbus, and I really suggest having it done at a chidlren's hospital if you can. It's so much more kid-friendly.

She was pretty nervous beforehand, to the point where we had them give her something to relax her. I think it's called versa. Basically, she was doped up, which made things fairly amusing.

Unfortunately, they wouldn't let us be there right when she woke up, but when we got there she was still pretty groggy. Once we got the all clear to go home, she was fine. She was back to preschool the next day.

I had it done when I was 3, and I still remember some of it. It is kind of scary to wake up in such a strange place, but by the time you're really alert, parents are there, so I strongly doubt it'll scar her.

Make sure they know she's vomited from anesthesia. They might give her something different to help it.

  • DS1 had his adenoids and hernia repaired right before turning 3.  The surgery was quick and he was only bothered by his hernia.  DS2 had his adenoids removed and tubes at 14  months and then again in Oct he had tubes and his hernia repaired.  I told both of them they were getting their belly button fixed and their nose or ears fixed so they didn't get sick as much.  With DS1 we did not do happy juice beforehand and with DS2 we did.  I recommend the happy juice.  they don't even care they are leaving you.  They both got zophran while in surgery so neither got sick.
