Chase and I were out running errands today. I pulled into a parking spot at the store, put the car in park and sat there for a few minutes sharing a snack with Chase before we went inside. When I pulled in, I noticed that the man in the car facing me was reading in the drivers seat. I figured he was waiting for someone and didn't think anything of it. A couple of minutes later, I noticed that a little girl had climbed from the floorboards into the passenger seat. There was no room in the car for a car seat, as the back of the car was completely filled with bags and stuff. I was concerned at that point, but thought there was a possibility that they were waiting together for people inside, and that she would eventually be taken out of the car and put into another car with a car seat. I decided to stick around to make sure, so I waited in my car.
After about 10 minutes, a woman came out of the store with a huge box with a memory foam mattress topper in it. She then got in the front passenger seat, and pulled the toddler in her lap. The driver stuffed the mattress topper in the already full backseat and got back in the car. They put the toddler onto the floorboards at the passengers feet. I watched the driver hit the little girl hard 3 times to get her to stay on the floor, then they pulled out and drove away. I called 911 and gave them the description of the car and the license plate, but I don't feel like it was enough. That poor little girl. She was smiling and waving at me before the woman got in the car.
This little girl was probably about 15 months old. She deserves so much better than that. I really try not to judge parents, but if you can afford a nice car, and a $120 memory foam mattress topper, you can afford a car seat for your child. Not to mention, the hitting. This happened 7 hours ago and I'm still shaken.
Hug your babies!
