Toddlers: 24 Months+

City Select vs. City Mini - double (need advice)

I will have a 22 month old and a newborn.

I am torn between these two.

I currently have the city mini single and love everything about it EXCEPT the under storage space which is worthless and does not fit our diaper bag.

The city mini double is lighter and easier to fold and although it fits through doorways I worry when going to the mall for example and trying to fit in between aisles, etc.

I like the versatility of the city select but do not like the weight of it and how I need to take a piece off to fold it.

Thoughts? Personal experience?

I just answered someone else one this. If you are willing to switch brands, try the Britax above. We tried the City mini and the main difference was the city you just pulled and it collapsed while the Britax you pushed a button and then pulled. An extra step, but I like to think of it as a safety feature. As for being in the mall, yes there are some aisles you won't be able to go through, but I just took my girls to a Kohls and was able to navigate through most of the shoe aisles. The clothing racks, forget, but my girls give me such a hassle when I am out for too long anyway, it doesn't really matter. The City was like way more expensive than the Britax at BBB and, then we price matched the amazon price for over $100 off. I love it. It is light for a double stroller, and it swivels like a dream! You can even adapt it for a car seat. Not sure what car seats it will accept, since DD2 is too old for a car seat at this point. There are no cup holders, so you have to buy a $25 strap on (!!!) that will hold to drinks and a box thing in the middle for a phone or keys or whatever, or you can get a bar that fits over each side for $25 each that has a cup holder in the middle.

  • I was torn between these two and picked the city mini double because weight and ease of putting in and out of the car was a big factor for me.  Ours just came from albee baby this weekend and so far I really like it.

You can get the orange and grey one for $299 total on albee baby right now and the other colors are a little more.

  • We own both and  I love each for different reasons

The city select is great for everyday....especially if you have a toddler and baby. It was great to drop the carseat into (chicco), could be a single/double/we got the glider board for DD to use for quick errands. I love the seat configurations (so do the kids which often request to see each other), I love that one kid isn't sitting on the floor like the phil & teds or Britax, and the basket is HUGE and fits a large diaper bag + more! With two toddlers it is a little cramped and I regretted taking it to Disneyland, you can't do a diaper change in this stroller (problem at Disney) and my DS will lean forward and pull DD hair or kick her seat.

The city mini (we got the GT) is amazing. The kids are more comfortable, turns on a dime, fits through a standard doorway (but not an inch to spare), both kids can nap comfortably, easy folding, my kids won't outgrow this stroller anytime soon, and our GT came with parent console. What I hate- the basket is worthless. All I can fit is a few sweaters or a sippy cup really. I bought a skiphop double diaper bag which fits across the bars and that works best for me but I never can get anything from the basket. Our GT is heavier which is okay but a pain when lifting into a SUV. The sunshade is huge and great but even when my DD is sitting up and the sunshade is back she calls it "the cave" and if you have hot hot summers this can be a problem. It does have lots of ventilation but we went to the zoo on a hot day and we actually left because it was much hotter in the stroller and it was like a heat trap.

  • I think we are going with the City Select purely because the weight limit is higher. I'd be completely open to another double stroller if the weight limit was high! DS is already 45 pounds and I'm not due with #2 until August!

  • I have no expereince with the City Select, but we have a City Mini double and I hate it.  Our single stroller is a BOB, and nothing compares to that.  We were debating between a BOB double and the City Mini double.  We ultimately decided on the City Mini double because it's lighter than the BOB double and it was cheaper (we didn't want to spend a bunch of money on a double when DD1 is close to outgrowing the stroller).  We totally regret our decision.  The City Mini is so hard to navigate and push compared to the BOB.  Walking on uneaven surfaces is difficult, as is going over and down curbs.  It's even difficut to manuver indoors.  I took it to the mall over the weekend for the first time and it was a nightmare to push around.  Difficut to get through doors, crowds, and between clothing racks.  I also hate the basket.  As somone else mentioned, it's useless.  Also the canopy doesn't work when you have an infant carset in the stroller with the attachment because the carseat sits too high.

  • I can't comment on using it w/ an infant seat b/c I used it for twins starting around 8 months old or so. Other than the basket, I love mine. (I will say for the record the basket is ok for storing things you want to tote around to use when you arrive somewhere & the kids are out of the stroller but if you want easy access in & out while the kids are sitting in it, then it is horrible.).  I don't do a lot of shopping with it in places that would require me to maneuver between tight racks of clothes so this has not been a problem for me. I don't find it hard to maneuver as far as turning or moving around if there is enough width and the ease of folding & putting in the back of my car was huge for me. WIth the belly bar attached, it is even easier to throw in the car (disclaimer though, I broke one of my belly bars, probably from doing this ;) ).  I I take it up & down curbs all the time going backwards though with no real problem though of course it isn't as easy as it would be with large rubber tires. One con for me (unless they've changed it, mine is 3 yrs old) was that the tray & cup holders sit up really high and I never used them as a result, but I just got those straps for their straw cups to attach them to the stroller which was fine & they held onto their snack cups so i'm not sure the tray would have been much better anyway.

The fact that you had to take a seat off the select was a huge con for me, esp once they started walking, it was one more hassle in doing anything.  I guess I could see the shades trapping the heat but you don't have to put them all the way up, you can put them at any level and that is the great thing- you have all those options. Sure, the kids can reach up & pull them all the way down but this is not an issue at my house & I've had the stroller for 3 yrs & lived in NC for the first couple yrs.

this is why we got the GT model. It is bigger all terrain tires,  this helped a lot https://blog.babygizmo.com/2012/02/baby-jogger-city-mini-2012-vs-city-mini-gt-comparison-video-and-chart/
