Have you decorated yet?

If so, how's your LO doing around all of it?  DS is so curious and into everything as it is I can just imagine him pulling the stockings down, knocking the tree over, moving the presents to other rooms, etc.... I can't decide if I should decorate as normal or just get a little Charlie Brown tree and put it on top of the dining room table.

Re: Have you decorated yet?

  • We've had our stuff up for a couple of weeks now, and I set up both my artificial Christmas tree and a little pre-lit Walmart tree I had used for my classroom.  I made a big deal about the little tree being C's, talking to him about it, playing with him next to it. I put a couple of unbreakable ornaments, an ornament of DH and I in a picture frame, along with the rings from his stackable tower on it.  He loves it, he takes the ornaments on and off and leaves ours alone.  Whenever he goes over to ours, I remind him that it is Mommy and Daddy's tree, and he can go play with his own.  So far, the simple redirecting has worked (KNOCK ON WOOD)

  • G has been surprisingly good around it - and he's an active kid who seemingly gets into everything. We have a big tree - fake - right in the living room, where we are most of the time. He walks up to it, but he clearly knows he's not supposed to, because when I say "No," he giggles and runs away. So far, he hasn't touched it. I didn't put out any of the usual nicknacks, though, and the stockings hang over the stair rail, so he can't get to those.
  • We decorated on Saturday, and, except for a few changes, it's pretty much the same. I was nervous about it, too, but Rhys seems to be doing ok around all of it. I just made sure to put the dollar store bulbs I bought at the bottom of the tree so my nice ones won't get pulled down. I also hung them up usung string instead of the hooks, so when be pulls them down he wont get poked by the hooks. The stockings are hung up pretty high so he can't reach them. I also won't be putting presents out until much closer to Christmas. I know he'll be all over those!

That's cool- I like the idea of his own little tree.

  • We haven't decorated anything yet - it is on my list of things to do this weekend!

We are planning on decorating as usual, but keeping the ornanments to the top part of the tree. My parents already decorated their house and DD is at their house everyday, and so far the only issue they've had is her pulling the ornaments off.  They've removed them from the bottom half.  Other than that, she has been pretty good.

My friend's family has always done the upside down Christmas tree (they hang it from their rafters) and I was just saying to her yesterday that I wish I could do that in our house so I wouldn't have to worry about DD touching it!

  • Most of my decorations are up high or in rooms that I can gate off. The tree is what she gets into the most. We just redirect her and try to keep her distracted with other things. She also has unwrapped a present. She's into everything these days.

  • We haven't. I'm putting the tree up today with the kids. I'm pretty nervous, but I'm sure after a while they will get sick of it. I hope anyway. My DD last year was afraid of it, so I hope my DS acts the same this year. She didn't even try to touch it.

I do have a big baby gate to put around it just in case it because a huge issue.

  • we did this weekend. DD seems interested in it but really hasn't touched much. We tell her gentle when she is pulling on an ornament on the tree. She is much more into the toys that sing. We have way to many things that move and sing and she has started  playing them all at the same time .Smile

  • We decorated last week. I usually have a ton of decorations, but I only put up a few this year. We have the tree gated off, and I only decorated the mantel, and hung stockings. He loves the tree and I have no doubt he would mess with it if it wasn't gated off. He is able to reach the stockings, but has no interest in them.
  • I have not decorated yet and actually my fall decorations are still out. However, when we do decorate, we will probably just buy a 4 ft tree and put it on the sofa table like we did last year. That keeps it out of reach of both DS and the dogs.

  • We are in the process of decorating but both our parents have already put trees up. We just do the same thing with the trees that do with the rest of the house. I try to keep breakable ornaments and the ones with metal hooks off the bottom and we just keep the kids away from it. I do take her over to look at the ornaments and we talk about them but she knows not to touch.
  • Our decorations are up but we haven't gotten our tree

  • We decorated this weekend, at first he was curious and tried to steal some ornaments off the tree but after telling him no a few times and putting the ornaments back he has been really good with not touching it. We have a couple kid friendly decorations I put out, like a dancing reindeer that he gets to play with. And his favorite thing to play with so far was the Christmas tree box!

  • We went ahead and did a full size tree (the biggest we've ever done in fact) and she's just curious about it - not destructive at all. She will go over and take an ornament off and walk around with it, but we don't have anything heirloom on there and she soon puts it down in favor of something else at which point we just hangit back up. We have it secured to the wall with a bit of fishing line to a small hook, so we know she can't pull it over onto herself. She's doing really well with it.

  • L is also doing surprisingly well and I thought she'd be all over it. We used just the top of our 6 ft fake tree so she can't pull the branches off, and of course unbreakable ornaments on strings. She hasn't pulled any ornaments off but she likes batting at the balls so they all clack together.

  • Our tree is up. It is in a corner, blocked by the sofa and coffee table so DD can't get to it. Even if we didn't have it blocked off, I don't think she would do too much damage. She was curious right after it went up, but has since ignored it. If I hung stockings I am sure she would pull them down.
  • We decorated on Saturday.  The bottom of our tree is LBB's, so we put the unbreakable ornaments down there for him to take on and off as he pleases.  He hasn't seemed interested in the higher ornaments, the stockings, or the poinsettas.
