Which Sling/MeiTai for DH?

DH thinks babywearing is a great idea (in theory, since we're first time parents) and I'm thinking I want to get two different types of wearing options (we're having twins), but I'm not sure what are the best options for DH. I'd like to have the option to use either one for me, which means both will need to be breastfeeding friendly.  I can see us wearing them while traveling too.

What do your male partners use to babywear?  What do they seem to prefer the most?  Be specific with brands and colors please.

My brother-in-law won't wear their olive colored MayaWrap ring sling, but I'm not sure my DH will be quite as picky.

Thank you for your patience, I'm sure this gets asked at minimum once a month - I just couldn't find any recent posts on it.  Sorry if I'm being totally redundant.

Re: Which Sling/MeiTai for DH?

  • DH LOVED using the BabyHawk MT. LO is too heavy for long-wearing now, though, so we both use the Ergo. I still use my RS for short trips into the store, etc. I got my RS in a "manly" color so DH would use it and he hasn't used it once. He said he didn't want to look like a hippie. . . Anyway, our BabyHawk is also "manly". It's olive/drab green with sailor tattoos for the center panel. DH loves it so much he's even tried to talk other daddies into getting one. Ask your DH if he's interested in trying a particular carrier before you buy. OR, find a local BWing group so you can both go try some different styles and find out what you both really like.

  • My DH also really liked the babyhawk and I think it's an excellent choice for newborns and infants.  He also likes buckle carriers (moreso for back carries once you get to that point).  My siggy link has some info on carriers that I like for newborns and beyond - I'd have him take a look at what's out there and see what he think looks good.  It would also help to go to a babywearing meet up and try some things out if you can!
  • I bought a plain black Freetime Mei tai so that DH could also use it. We like it better than the Moby which he never wanted to wear because he thought it was a pain.

  • DH's first carrier was the Babyhawk Pikkolo in brown:

We each had our own moby, and DH wore his once, the day we got home from the hospital.  He hadn't slept in days, and for some reason remembered the moby being difficult and uncomfortable, and never wore it again.

I have a Babyhawk with this pattern:

DH was always jealous of the ease of use of the Babyhawk, but he thought the pattern was too feminine, so he wouldn't wear it. If I got a plain brown, he would have been all over it.

DH's current favorite is our lime green Ergo performance.

I've nursed in all these carriers, and can use them interchangeably with him, although I tend to use the Babyhawk as my go-to.

  • Lurker popping in to say that we solved this problem by getting a Babyhawk mei tai that's reversible. You can custom order them on their website. Ours is plain chocolate brown on one side for DH and the other side has a cute print on it for me. We also have a light blue Sleeping Baby Productions ring sling which DH won't wear. I love both for different situations and have nursed in both as well.

Great solution! DH and I were just talking about getting a reversible babyhawk for this very reason.
  • Baby hawk all the way! I love that you can design your own custom one with 2 different patterns, too.  That way you can have a cute side & DH can have a bland one.  Also, it's way easier to pass back & forth than the Bjorn or other "snap" carriers which need to be adjusted each time you switch users.
