Breastfeeding

BF and pumping at the same time...explain to me how this works

So, we are due in another month or so and I am starting to really stress about how breastfeeding will actually work out logistically.  Ideally I will BF exclusively for the first month, however after the first month I want to start BF and pumping, so that my husband (and others) can feed with breast milk in a bottle, and also in preparation for having to go back to work.  What I don't understand is...how do you feed the baby AND pump milk for bottles....it seems like you would have to do one or the other.  I don't want to pump and take any milk from what the baby needs for the next feeding.

I would be so appreciative if some of you experienced BF moms could help me figure out a real plan to making this work!

Re: BF and pumping at the same time...explain to me how this works

  • You can pump tiny amounts after baby has nursed, to build enough for a bottle.  Once you have enough for a bottle, you can give the bottle and pump instead of nursing for that feeding.  Once baby starts to sleep longer, you can pump the "missed" feedings and have extra milk.  Be warned, it will take a while to build up enough for that first bottle.  You don't want to pump too much because you'll establish an oversupply and your baby will be fussy at the breast.  So don't freak out when you only pump half an ounce.  :)

  • I prepared for going back to work by pumping once in the morning (after she eats) and once before bed (after she eats).  I was able to build up quite a stash in the freezer by then.  I always pump after she eats, so that I am certain she gets enough.  You give the pump milk only when you need to..i.e.: if hubby wants to help, if you are away from the baby, etc...  Whatever the situation you always need to pump/nurse  routinely to keep your sleep up.  Just because you supplement with a bottle doesn't mean you don't need to pump.

  • If you establish a time to pump once daily, your body will rather quickly adjust to create more milk at that certain time. So, say you pick 11am as your pump time, make sure to pump every day at that time, and your body will have the milk available. Basically, it will be a managed oversupply.

  • In the beginning I didn't really have a schedule because my Lo never ate on schedule so whenever there was a free moment I pumped ps I like the medela bulk pack bottle to pump into since they are small and 1/2 ounce looks big in them I mostly pumped when she was sleeping sometime she would wake up and I would have to unattached and go feed her. It just signaled to my body to make more milk. Two things to remember a baby is always more efficient then any pump so you could finish pumping and nurse and there would be at least 1/2 ounce in each side. Also the boobs aren't like cups they are never empty a suckling baby can always get you to start making more milk
