Babies: 6 - 9 Months

rolling over

My 6 month old rolled over starting at around 4.5 months from front to back and after that back to front but never consistently.  She now won't do it at all from front to back but just gets mad and cries until I come rescue her.  She will push herself up on her forearms but just sit there and cry.  She is sitting up on her own and supporting all of her weight when she "stands."  She is very social and seems to be doing well otherwise.  She has good muscle tone and I think she has the ability to do it but just won't.  Has anyone else had or seen this or know why she stopped/forgot how to roll over?

Re: rolling over

  • My LO was rolling over like a champ but then lost interest as he moved on to more fun things like sitting and pulling up (and now cruising). Like your LO, he had the ability/strength but just wasn't interested anymore. Just in the last couple of days he's started rolling again (mainly to get into crawling or pulling-up position).

I've read that this is normal; they learn a skill and may put it on hold for a while as they try out new skills.

  • Totally normal! My daughter rolled from stomach to back at 10 weeks! Well it must have been cause she hated and still hates tummy time. She now will roll onto her belly and flip out screaming till we rescue her! Even though she can roll back herself! She still refuses to roll on her right side and is 6.5 months!

  • Thank you!  Very reassuring!
  • DD seems to do this a lot. She's a pro at belly-back, and has recently started doing back-belly, but she still acts like she can't roll and cries until I turn her over every day. It's really odd!
