We wrapped up books we already own, I need to get 6 or 7 more. I also have added in a couple movies that we already had, but plan to collect more Christmas books to add to it.   Here's the pics of our's

For movies we put in How the Grinch Stole Christmas (cartoon one) and Veggie Tales St. Nicholas.  I want to pick up a few more to add to it as well :) For the 24th we have "Twas the night before Christmas" the book came from the Santa Claus House in North Pole, Alaska.  My aunt lives there and sent it to Layla for Christmas last year :)  We have a couple other versions of the story as well I mixed in :)  I love this time of year!!

ETA fixed sizes AGAIN!

Re: Advent Calendar?

  • We just did the regular chocolate calendars. My parents have a wooden house we got in Williamsburg and they put all kinds of things in there, candy, letters from Santa, money, chapstick, Christmas socks. I like to try to do an activity a day, watching something, making something, decorating, reading a special book that only comes out at Christmas, driving around looking at lights, even just sitting around drinking peppermint hot chocolate.
  • Loading the player...
  • I love this idea!

We are just doing one activity a day taken from a list. Last night DH and I played chess. Tonight we're doing to share our 3 favorite memories from 2012. Some of the other activities require preparation and a little $ (baking cookies, making ornaments) but many are free and easy.

  • I love the book idea. My LO loves to bring me books and read as it is already. I am always looking for new traditions/ideas.

  • Since I can't find a good way to keep DS away from a real tree, we decided to do a paper tree flat on the wall. We drew blank ornaments and as we count down to Christmas morning, we color in an ornament. So by Christmas, our tree will be complete.
  • I got the little people nativity calendar.

He's too young for it this year, but I think he will enjoy putting the pieces up next year and I like being able to incooperate the Christmas story.

Since its geared for such young kids, we will have to come up with something new when they are too big for it.

  • I wasn't going to start Gator's until next year, but we are doing something simple once a day just because. I am not making the actual calendar until next year or the year after. This is what is just on our list this year...in no particular order. Some days we will do one thing, some days...two things.:

    1. Shopping for a meet Santa and Christmas outfit.
    2. Make foam Santas for the grandparents they are from the dollar section at Target
    3. Watch Elf
    4. Read a Christmas book
    5. Get our tree
    6. Donate change to a red kettle
    7. Do a secret good deed
    8. Make holiday cookies
    9. Unwrap Christmas pajamas
    10. Walk Peacock Lane a street that shuts down and the whole area decorates like crazy that you walk through.
    11. Zoo lights and train
    12. Hot chocolate and the Make A Wish house the guy puts his lights to music and you can donate, all donations go to Make A Wish
    13. Christmas with her little best friend gift exchange
    14. Santa Claus is Comin' to Town movie
    15. Make popcorn balls
    16. Make a handprint or footprint decoration
    17. Pick out a new ornament for Gator
    18. Another Christmas book
    19. Pick out toy and donate it to toy drive
    20. Decorate the house and tree
    21. Bring Christmas card and cookies to grandparents in nursing home
    22. See santa
    23. Send out Christmas cards
    24. Christmas list or letter to Santa
    25. Mountain for sledding
    26. Fondue and Christmas movie night
    27. Donate canned foods
    28. Sleep under the Christmas lights

  • That is a really cute idea.  We don't have an advent calendar this year, but I definitely want to do something starting next year when DD will be more aware.
