Yup! I've had several u/s to check on my cysts and fibroids and every time I had to have a full bladder. But my advice? Just drink 8 ounces of fluid in the waiting room. The first time I had to do this I was 15 and didn't know better and had to go to the bathroom 20 minutes before even getting to the doctor and thought my bladder would explode halfway through the ultrasound because I drank a TON of water ahead of time. You don't need that much!

I agree with JCWhitey! drink a bottle of water in the waiting room or on your drive over to the doctor - last week i had to do a last minute advanced u/s and i guzzled a bottle of water in 15 minutes - within 30 minutes i thought i'd explode!
but yes a full bladder is necessary.

Depends. My practice likes a full bladder, but sometimes it can be a hindrance. Especially if you happen to pee the table because you've waited so long. Not that it happened to me or anything...
I have an u/s at the OBs office tomorrow afternoon. They said I needed to drink 32oz of water 30-45 minutes prior to my arrival. I will not be doing that. I will drink less than 32oz (I get a belly ache if I drink too much, too fast), and I will do so in the waiting room. All of my other u/s have been vaginal, and with an empty bladder.

I'm glad you asked this question as I have an u/s scheduled for this Thursday at 6 weeks and 6 days! It's been 8 years since I've been pregnant and seem to be out of the loop.
Yeah. There is such a thing as having too much in your bladder. I had so much that the technician could only see my bladder, so she told me to get rid of some of it.
I'm having a vaginal 8 week ultrasound on Friday, they told me to drink 32 oz of water and finish it an hour before the test. I honestly don't know why, I didn't have to do this last time at this appt, only at the anatomy scan.

That almost happened to me at my anatomy scan. I had even brought an extra pair of pants with me to the appt because I had a feeling I was going to pee my pants.

I'm surprised about this. I didn't have a chance to use the bathroom before I left for my u/s appt, and I wasn't full by any means, but the u/s tech made me use the bathroom because she couldn't see anything.

This. My ultrasounds so far have all been pre-pregnancy, but for vaginals I have always been told to pee first or the full bladder would obstruct their view.

I heard you were supposed to so I drank water all the way to my u/s for DD it was soooo uncomfortable I had to excuse myself about five mins into the appt to pee, the u/s tech laughed and said he hadn't ever seen a bladder so full he laughed so I won't ever do that again

It depends on the type of u/s. If you're doing a vaginal u/s then no you don't want a full bladder.
Abdominal u/s then yes, probably.
