Is this necessary or one of those "fear purchase" items?

For reference, we will be using a non-organic crib mattress. I, obviously, have no qualms purchasing if this is something that is absolutely necessary, proven effective, etc. But, also don't want to be scared that if I don't purchase, I am putting my child at risk.

    If you let your mattress air out before your lo gets here, the gasses should dissapate.  I wouldnt buy it.

    I think there is some truth to what this cover protects against, but I would invest in a quality mattress without chemicals and skip the weird cover!

    This is definitely a gimmick, trying to scare you into buying this cover.  What is a pure polymer anyway? Sounds very synthetic and non-descriptive.  Definitely not needed.  Take a look at some non-vinyl mattresses from LA baby and Naturepedic.
