Shoes?

Just curious...when you go out in public do you put shoes on your baby? I actually don't even own a pair of shoes for my son (well actually he got a pair as a gift but they are too big) but I never have put shoes on him- just socks- it is hard enough keeping his socks on because he likes to pick them off or chew on them..but the other day when we were out a friend acted like it was really weird and that his little feet must be freezing...he had socks on and covered in a blanket so I'm sure he wasn't cold..am I alone here? She made me feel like a bad mom ha

Re: Shoes?

  • Nope. DD has slippers which she wears. She has 2 pairs of shoes but like you said they are too big for her. She's still got her fat little baby feet that look like my swollen pregnancy feet so shoes don't stay on properly. She wears socks when we go out and has some socks that have a pattern on them that look like shoes. Does your friend have kids? If she does she should understand at this age finding shoes that fit properly is next to impossible (and pricey considering there is no point to them..they can't walk!).

  • hahaha swollen pregnancy feet! too funny, thats what my sons still look like too...ok I feel better..yeah he does have those socks that look like sneakers ha..the friend that said it doesnt have kids but the other friend we were with has an 8 month old little girl and she had shoes on so it made me look bad! She was wearing a dress with tights and had little slip on type shoes...she didn't really back me up either so thats why I was wondering if I'm being a neglegent mother or something ha

  • I don't put a coat on DD when she's in her car seat because it's not recommended since it makes too much space between them and the straps. So I use her bundle bag and just take that off and use that to get her from the car to inside. Well I took DD for her Santa pics last night and at the mall some woman was side-eyeing me because DD wasn't wearing a coat even though she was stuffed into the fleece bag and I was parked in the parking space for mothers which is right next to the handicap parking about 10 feet from the door.

There will always be people there to judge you who don't understand or know the whole story. Don't let them make you feel like a bad mom. If the worst thing you do in your friends eyes is let your kid go shoeless at 6 months, you're a pretty awesome mom.

  • Thats crazy, I would have done the same thing!  I know I feel the same way like if we run out and I forget his hat or something but I have his hood on and he's bundled I feel like some people are giving me bad looks..I think I'm paranoid! haha...ok I feel better now, I was starting to think I was alone in this......I told my friend I'd promise to put shoes on him when he became mobile haha

  • We have fleece booties that have soft bottoms. I think DD is too young for shoes since she's not standing/walking yet.

I agree, though - it is tough to go out in different weather and know what would work for LOs! You're not a bad mom! For the record, I've been out in cold weather in shoes many many many times and still got frozen feet!

  • It's not good for babies feet to be in hard shoes until over a year and after they've been walking for awhile.

We have tons of handmedowns but I don't put anything on Lucas unless its cloth soft bottomed shoes. I may for pics but that's it.

  • Only for the look of it... if I'm dressing her up for something.

That's only happened probably a handful of times.  The rest of the time it's sock feet.

  • We have a few pairs of shoes for DS. Some we received as gifts. I have two pairs that we purchased as part of outfits for portraits we had taken a few weeks ago. I bought him a pair of sandals over the summer too. I dont normally put them on him but when we are going somewhere aside from regular everyday errands, like a party or out to dinner or something, I will put a pair of shoes on him. It ends up being useless now anyway because he pulls everything off of his feet as soon as he gets the chance to...although I have found that putting two pairs of socks on his feet, one sock over the other, makes it more difficult for him to pull them off, which is nice because I am not constantly putting socks back on his cold little feet!

  • I use just socks all the time.  The only time I put shoes on him was for his x-mas picture.  I don't see the point really until he is walking.  Before that it's just for looks and the darn things are too expensive I think for no practicality.

    Edited for spelling.

  • He's had shoes on a few times for show. They end up who knows where after about 5 minutes. Lol. I can't keep socks on him either. I'm taking socks out of his mouth 25 times a day and putting them back on.

  • I actually really like the ministar shoes.  DS is forever pulling his socks on so the shoes actually prevent him from doing that.  However; they're crazy expensive new (I think like $20) but I got them as hand-me-downs.  We have 2 pairs and he'll wear them to daycare or church

This.  I bought her some boots and a couple of pairs of shoes from Gordman's b/c they are cheap there ($5-6 a pair) and on sale.  I only get the soft bottom shoes.

  • I only use them to keep his feet a little warmer when we're going out because he likes to be hot. So we leave the house with shoes, a hat, and an aden and anais dream blanket. Fwiw, the pedipeds and robeez are both leather and soft bottomed, and they stay on his fat little feet very well.
