STM: How many nurses did you have?

So I am making little nurse bags to put in my hospital bag. I was planning on putting 4 together. Simple stuff that I have gotten for free with coupons but still cute. I am doing a travel crabtree and evelyn lotion, chap stick, home made oatmeal honey soap (my mom makes soap), pack of gum, some candy, and a few other little things. I always hear how "most" of the nurses are so awesome and I thought it would be nice to put some little bags together to show my appreciation. I just don't want to leave any of them out. So how many would you say you had that you felt you came into contact with multiple times or that you felt warranted a little thank you bag.

  • Hmm.  To be honest I don't even remember, probably just one who was there most of the time and maybe a 2nd who popped in now and then?  We just grabbed a box of Munchkins on the way to the hospital, not nearly as thoughtful as your gifts!

  • This a good question. I'm just having my co-worker (she has a catering business on the side) bring two dozen cupcakes when she comes by the hospital to see us. I've already arranged it with her. I didn't want to try and put something together or remember to pack something else...so I thought I would delegate!

  • You will probably be assigned a new nurse every 12 hours bc that is how long their shifts run. So it really depends how long you are in the hospital.

Oh my gosh I seriously want munchkins now! haha I love DD! Thats a cute idea as well. I know I would be happy to get munchkins.  So I'll just stick with the few I have made and toss them in my bag. I think it should be fine.

  • You're so thoughtful! We also thought about doing the same thing, since DH and I both work in the medical field, we know a little something goes a long way. I would say you should be safe with 4. Generally, you are in the hospital for 2 days, 2 nurse shifts per-day, so 4 should be good. And chances are you will have the same 2 nurses the 2nd day as you did the 1st (assuming they keep the same nursing assignment day-to-day). Maybe 2 extra in case your stay ends up being longer, or if you want to give one to the lactation consultant, if you choose to use one. If you have extra, just give em to the people who come visit you in the hospital.

That is a good idea. It can not hurt to just pack a few extra just to be safe.

  • Very sweet idea! I bet the ladies at the desk would love a basket of goodies too if you get really into the giving spirit.
  • Hmm... I'm having a hard time remembering too.  I honestly don't remember a lot of my labor, it wasn't a good experience.  I feel like there was more than one at any given time and I was there for at least 2 shifts in L&D.  Now, postpartum I remember having at least 2 different nurses and an LC that were great.

I really didn't bond at all with the nurses that were in and out during L&D.  If I were doing "treats" for anyone it definitely would have been for the postpartum nurses.  They were the really helpful ones.  JMO!

  • Uh, I'm not sure. A few. There were ones that did different functions like meds or BP. I brought bagels and just gave them to the front desk in recovery.

  • As a nurse I have to agree here. Snacks are always welcome! And as pp said its a weird gray area when it comes to accepting gifts from patients i have had people offer gift cards, cash, coffee mugs, I even had a lady try to give me her earrings once and we can really get into trouble for it. Go with the munchkins, cookies, candy, etc. anything that we can eat on the go is best! Also, they share these things with the aids, unit secretaries, housekeepers, the people who deliver your meals and other people who you may not see, but had a lot to do with helping the nurse behind the scenes to get his/her job done so they can be so good to you.

When I had DS I was in for a week and that was a lot of people to thank. This time we will be right around Christmas so I am planning to get a few bags of holiday Hershey kisses and Reese's and maybe some munchkins for everyone.
  • I did not do this with baby 1, but then again, almost all of my pp nurses were awful. I think I had one or two decent ones, but the rest were horrific, especially the night nurses. I'm not going out of my way to put together anything this time.

Thanks! It is good to hear opinions from an actual nurse. and what you say does make a lot of sense. Maybe doing treats would be better. Plus I am big on comment cards. I think so many people take the time to complain and then forget to take the time to appreciate great service. So I agree on that.  thanks for the tips!
