I'm 22 weeks pregnant and after a routine ultrasound, the tec noticed the baby had a av canal defect( as well as a small measuring baby) and told me I had a 50% chance of the baby having ds. After meeting a cardiologist who confirmed both av defect and most likely a ds baby from some markers it sounds like my baby has ds. I'm so tossed if I should have the maternity 21 test or just wait till delivery. This cardiologist seemed pretty confident in his opinion on the ds. If any of you mamas wo are in this position have any advice, I would strongly appreciate it. Thank you.

I think I would opt to have the Materni21 test. It's an easy blood test and would help give me piece of mind. Plus I would want to know so that I could start planning accordingly.

We did the MaterniT21 at 12-13 weeks -- it came back positive for down syndrome for us. While getting the results sent us on an emotional roller coaster for a while. I'm glad we did the test and are able to prepare for a baby with down syndrome before birth.
We've joined the DADS and the DSSM (Dads Appreciating Down Syndrome and Down Syndrome Super Moms) groups and having the chance to meet up with parents of children with down syndrome has really helped address the fears that have come up since finding out.
When we did the 20 week a/s -- it did show some of the markers they look for when down syndrome is not known.
Whether you do the test or not is a personal decision -- I personally am glad we did the test so early as I've been able to become comfortable with the 99% chance that the baby will have down syndrome and now I'm back to enjoying every bit of this pg again. We did the test early due to us being older parents.
