Intro and horrid a/s

Hi everyone!

I'm new to the board and due April 23rd (baby will be delivered around the 16th via c-section)

Today I had my a/s and afterwards was told that my little boy had cysts in his brain. They said it is very common but is also a marker for Tri-18. His femur bones are also in the 9th percentile. I have to go back in 4w for another scan and I had more blood work done for the tri-18 screening.

The doctors said he had no other markers for the defect and feel confident that he doesn't have it but I thought that shorter limbs were also an indicator of down syndrome? I don't know.. This has really brought me down.

Have any of you had any of these problems and did they correct themselves? Especially the short femur?

Re: Intro and horrid a/s

  • Im sorry you are having to go through this!:(  Are the cysts Chlorid Plexus (sp)?  My first son had 2 of them and I remember crying at my doctor's office when I found out.  Just hearing the words cyst and brain in the same sentence freaked me out!  My doctor also assured me they were very common and her own daughters even had them and they went away.  Needless to say they resolved themselves and I have a healthy 5 year old now.  I am sure it will be fine.  Good luck and thoughts an prayers your way!

  • oh that's stressful.

I was actually talking to my sister about this last weekend.  Her son had measured short on the femur bones. They had a greater ratio for the DS marker too. She ended up getting an amnio so they could be prepared one way or the other.  Turned out he was fine, just had shorter Femur bones.  He's 4 now and totally fine.  A little on the shorter side, but no other problems.

Those are exactly it! Yeah they said it is so common that they've seen 5 people the same day with them. It just sounds horrible and the thought of tri-18 is even worse. I was actually fine when they told me because he didn't seem worried at all, but then when I talked to the dr. she said he also had short femurs and that just made me freak out.

I'm confused.  Is the dr concerned about Trisomy 18 OR Down Syndrome which is Trisomy 21?

  • I don't have any experience on the femur bones, but my DS had several CPCs after our a/s. I was really scared, but they were all gone by the follow up u/s a few weeks later and he's a perfectly healthy (and sassy) almost 3 year old now. My cousin is one of the top neurologists in the country and when I told him about it he sort of laughed and said it was lame that the OB even told me about them and got me worked up. He said they're usually nothing and that most of us probably have or had them, they just were never picked up on u/s because the technology wasn't as good. Hoping you have similar news, but I wouldn't panic. They will likely be totally gone by your follow up. GL!

Tri-18 is what is associated with the brain cysts. Downs is associated with the short femur, so both. She's mostly concerned with the Tri-18 though and not really with the downs.

Yeah, the only reason I have one in 4 weeks is because I have a low lying placenta and the shorter femur they'll check anyways since they are there. They said the cysts usually don't go away until much later so they don't really care to check on them anytime soon, but I am sure they will since I have to have the u/s anyways..

Yeah, the specialist said it's very common and there were no other markers which leads him to believe it's nothing, I just got worried after talking to the other dr. and finding out he also has short femurs. I had an NT scan and tripple and quad and all were good with like 1/5000 chance so.. Fingers crossed!
