Sippy cup frustration

We have been working on transitioning from the bottle to the sippy cup for about two weeks now.  He seems to do alright with it at daycare because he sees other kids doing it, but he still isn't getting all of the formula he should be.  At home it seems to be much more difficult.  He has no problem taking water from the cup, but when it's formula he doesn't want anything to do with it.  I know he's hungry and I know it's what he wants, but he will just sit there and cry instead of drinking it.  I have resisted getting the bottle out and just letting him have it, but he becomes less and less receptive to the cup the more upset he  gets.  I have gotten him to take some sips from it when he's eating, but it's only two or three sips.  I've tried putting water in the bottle, and he doesn't seem to mind it, so that was unhelpful.  I have tried giving him an open cup and he is more interested in playing with it than attempting to put it to his mouth.  And if I try to put it to his mouth he will throw it to the floor.

I know it's not necessarily and easy or quick process, but it is so frustrating.  I'm struggling with trying to help this process along and making sure he still gets the nutrition he needs.  And a lot of my friends/family with kids didn't seem to have this struggle, it just worked for them no problem.   The type of sippy cup doesn't seem to matter either, as he drinks from several easily when it's water. I feel like I'll just wind up weaning him from the formula instead of the bottle.

  • We have the same frustration here.

  • It can be extremely frustrating!  I tried every sippy cup and he would just chew on it or toss it!  I finally went back to the original one( a nuby) and he finally has the hang of it.  It took FOREVER, but the minute I stopped obsessing over it, he started showing interest in it.  He will get it.  It might just take a little while.  Oh and it was literally yesterday that he drank formula out of there for the first time.
  • I hear you. We just started WCM yesterday and tried going cold turkey with the bottle. Did not go well at all. He screamed most of the day, didn't nap, and was generally miserable. Like your LO, he drinks water fine but wanted his milk from a bottle. It got to the point where he wouldn't take the water from the sippy cup anymore because he was convinced I was hiding milk in there.  I caved and gave him the bottle today since it was his birthday party. Now he is used to drinking WCM (first day he wasn't a fan of it but today he drank much more) we will be doing at least one bottle a day from the sippy cup. When you transition to WCM you don't really give scheduled bottles not accompanied by meals minus waking and going to sleep... so hopefully he will catch on soon and just take the darn sippy cup!

We also have tried a couple different kinds with no luck for the milk. He can drink out of all of them except the straw cup we got (thought it would be easy for him to figure out but it's kinda hard to teach someone to suck through a straw)

  • So glad to know I'm not alone! :)

  • I know you said the type doesn't matter, but have you tried a straw sippy?  DD does so much better with a straw.  Granted - she is breastfed so she is used to sucking a little harder than a bottle fed baby, but if I really want her to drink something, I'll put it in a straw cup.  She has a really hard time understanding that she needs to tilt her head back to get anything with the other sippies.  The challenge with a straw sippy, though, is that they do spill so you can't just hand it to baby and let him/her walk around with it.

We have theNuby straw sippys below and they never leak.  I'm going to try to offer formula in a sippy for the first time this afternoon :/  I'm doing a little research on here today.

  • We have tried the straw sippy cup and unfortunately were met with the same results.  He does do really well with it, but as soon as he tastes the formula he opens his mouth and just lets it all fall out all over the floor.  Such a stinker.
