Would you tell potential landlord about pregnancy?

Last post, I swear.

Long story short: My husband works a 1/2 hr away in another city, and our lease is up in Feb. We have decided to move Feb. 1st, in order to be closer to his work. We live in Canada, so I will be on mat leave, possibly up to a year.

Should we be telling potential landlords about the pregnancy? I talked to one lady the other day, and was very honest with her. She never called me back. It then crossed my mind that maybe she would be concerned about our ability to pay rent on a reduced income.

Has anyone else been in this situation? I am generally a pretty honest person and hate withholding information. I just don't want people to assume that we cannot make ends meet once LO is here, and the 60 day deadline to find a place is freaking me out.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!

  • It's irrelevant to your tenancy.  It's none of anyone's business.

  • I would only verify that there's nothing against having young children in the lease....if not then it's none of their business.

  • No, but obviously when the baby is born they need to be listed as a person living in the home on the lease.

  • I'm not sure how things work in Canada, but don't you go look at the place in person before moving in? Wouldn't they then be able to see that you're pregnant?

Either way, I don't see what that has to do with anything - it's really none of their business.

  • Your going to have to prove you can afford the place with an application, so they will know you dont work, but it has nothing to do with why.

Ok thanks guys. I really appreciate the advice. I'm not showing at all so far, and we're going to start looking at places really soon, so this shouldn't be an issue. I guess I'll just keep it quiet as long as I can.

  • We just moved, it took us quite a while to find a place and with it just appearing to be the two of us they seemed to think it was a little odd to get a big 3 bedroom house. Also because we were renting I wanted to ask if I could paint the nursery, because that is VERY important to me. So before we ever filled out applications I always ended up telling them one way or another. We did have a lot of trouble, one real estate agent even told us he didn't want to rent to us because I'm pregnant and we aren't married. I was......very upset. And then we found our place and I believe our landlords said yes partly because I'm pregnant, they are really nice, family-oriented people. They even gave me a stroller.

So you never know, it just takes time, don't get discouraged. If painting is important to you and you didn't want to tell them you could just ask if you can paint in general, but they might ask why/what you want to paint.
