Today I took Julian to feed the ducks a a nearby park. I parked my car by the walking track (next to the duck pond), put him in his stroller on the track, and grabbed the bread and my camera from the car. When I turned back around, the stroller had rolled off the track, onto the grass, and toward the pond. It was stopped by a picnic table.
I always, ALWAYS use the brake on the stroller. I don't know why I didn't today. The walking track appeared to be completely flat, and I would have NEVER guessed that there would be enough of a slope for the stroller to roll off, but that is not an excuse. It was rolling incredibly slowly, and I do think that had the picnic table not been there, I would have been able to catch it in plenty of time before it got to the pond, but I can't be sure of that. I don't even want to think about that heavy (travel system type) stroller rolling into a pond with my baby strapped in it.
I 100% deserve to be flamed for this. I feel so sh!tty that I don't even plan on telling my husband, and I tell him everything.
Re: totally flameable confession
Umm...not as bad as the time I put DD in the stroller and as I was loading the bottom, apparently I didn't lock it in place, the whole thing collapsed flat on her. She wasn't hurt at the time, just shaken up. BUT, to make matters worse, a couple rushed over to help, I figured they were checking to make sure things were OK as I opened it back up. Well, they weren't, and her hand got SMASHED in the little latch. Poor thing had a pretty big dent / bruise.
Sounds like you and me are both clumsy. It's scary for sure.
I think you thought you had the brake on, so it's totally understandable why you didn't think twice about it. And had the stroller reached the pond, I KNOW you would have ran like a maniac and jumped into the pond the get him out!
Don't beat yourself up over it. I'm sure it happens often in many different situations. That picnic table was there for a reason ... someone was just giving you a little help.

Aww, try not to beat yourself up! I'm sure we all have stories that can compare. We're human and things like this are bound to happen. Like PP said, if the worst had happened and your LO ended up in the pond, you would have been in there so fast to pull the stroller out!
The other day, I had a bunch of stuff in my front seat so DH sat in the back of our car with LO. He had just put him in his car seat and I started driving. Well, I was pulling out of our complex and I hear his seat belts click. DH hadn't done them up all the way yet! We have a pretty large complex and I'd been driving for a minute or so already. I freaked out. Nolan was fine (thank God). Stuff happens.
I think you're flaming yourself enough for this, nobody else would need to.
I can't imagine how scary that was for you.

Don't feel too bad. We all make stupid mistakes with our LOs from time to time. I forgot to buckle Hayley in after her 4 month check up and drove home with her just chilling in the infant seat.
I didn't tell DH either.

i did this, once, too, driving across a strip mall type of parking lot. I buckled the bottom belt but not the clip, don't ask me why. Bottom line, everything is fine, it's a learning experience.

You made me remember my own incident. I was driving Addy from a friend's house to a store a few months ago, probably about 2 or 3 miles, in pretty heavy traffic (no interstate though). I remember I firetruck even went by that I had to stop for. When I got to the store and went to take her out of her carseat in the back I realized I had failed to fasten her seatbelt. Got the bucket seat into the base but didn't fasten the seatbelt. I couldn't stop thinking about it all day and was totally freaking out, but it has made me more careful now.
Don't beat yourself up. We all have these terrifying moments!
