1st Trimester

Anyone else waking up with sore, achy legs?

I usually sleep on my back, but my doctor recently encouraged me to start only sleeping on my side. Apparently, when you sleep on your back your uterus, which is growing heavier, can put pressure on a vein that returns blood from your lower body to your heart.

In any case, since I've begun only sleeping on my side, I have been waking up with sore, achy legs from my hips down through my calves. I feel like a ran a marathon the day before. Is anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas as to why it's happening?

  • It can put your hips out of alignment. Try sleeping with a pillow between your knees.

  • Thanks! I am definitely going to try that tonight!
  • Also, I suspect your Dr is telling you to do this now so you can get used to it before late 2nd trimester I don't think your uterus is big enough during 1st tri to matter. Maybe just focus on FALLING asleep on your side now, and don't worry about where you end up when you're asleep.

  • I've been really having a problem with that too... someone here mentioned sleeping with a pillow beneath your hips, low enough that your hips tilt down towards the bed... it's the only thing that helps me sleep!
