Pregnant after a Loss

Intro from an old timer

I used to post a few years back on TTC after 35, TTC after Loss, and a few others. It's been awhile but I have been poking around and see some familiar names.

My story is a little complex but net-net, I found out this morning I'm pregnant. I was in such disbelief that I took 6 pregnancy tests, and then another one tonight. LOL

One of the questions I have is when I was pregnant before (and undergoing fertility treatments) they put me on Prometrium for low Progresterone. I'm not currently being seen by the Fertility Doc, but am thinking I should ask for them to test my progesterone... My regular OB wont see me until 8 weeks. I'm nervous about the thought of miscarrying again. Thoughts?

Anyway, Congrats to all of you here. Hope to get to know you better.

Re: Intro from an old timer

  • First, congrats!

Second, does your regular OB know about your loss history? Because of my prior m/c, my OB saw me right away and took bloodwork, etc. He's been seeing me more frequently so far.

  • Big congrats and welcome. I am also AMA at 39.

I had a loss in Oct and my OB tested my progesterone and it came back extremely low. The test ended up being two days before my loss which was very early at only 4w 5d. But even before that I thought I was going to miscarry because I was charting and saw a large drop in temp. I know that the two correspond. That low temp equals low progesterone but that it's impossible to know if the low progesterone was the cause of the temp dropping or the other way around. It could have been that the miscarriage happened for some other reason which then caused the progesterone to drop. She prescribed the progesterone but I was only on a low dose for one day before I miscarried. I didn't get my positive test until way late that cycle too.

Since that was my second loss and because of my age I was referred to an RE. Since I wasn't really advised to try again or not we went ahead and tried. More like we just didn't avoid it. And to my shock got a BFP the next month the morning of my first RE appointment. That was this current pregnancy, He didn't test my levels but based on the previous test put me on 200 mg twice a day. So I started it much earlier this time and a higher dose. Unfortunately at my first u/s they didn't see a fetal pole so things are not looking very likely for me this time around. But there is no way to know at this point if that has anything to do with the progesterone. It is one of my theories though. That maybe I should have started it right after ovulation.

Alllllll this said though lol I know this has been so long! While I have read that progesterone can definitely decrease with age both my OB and RE have said and I have read that there is absolutely no evidence that it prevents miscarriage. But both approached it as we don't see any harm in it and it MAY help but we have no evidence and no studies that prove that it will.

So that's my story FWIW! So happy for you to be so suprised and hoping for the best for you!

    ***All always welcome!!***

  • If ti were me, I would call the OB and ask for a P4 test and beta and if it is low, I would get supplements. If you had been on them before with your RE and it makes you feel better then do it. Take charge!

I saw an RE for this pregnancy and if I were to get pg on my own after I would head straight to the dr and demand P4 test and lovenox, I believe they were both instrumental in making this pg viable.

  • Honestly, you really need to press for progesterone testing immediately. If you are known to have issues, you need to get on supplements as soon as you can. If nothing else, it will provide you with the feeling you're doing all you can to provide your baby a fighting chance.

Best of luck to you, and so many congratulations! I wish you a happy and healthy nine months.

  • I would call, explain the situation if they already don't know. Request Betas and Progesterone. There is no reason for them not to give it to you. GL and congrats. Find a nice sticky seat and kick your feet up for 9 months!

  • Congrats and welcome! I think you should call and be seen right away. I was put on progesterone right away at 5 weeks 6 days, the sooner the better I'm told. I was on it until 10 weeks.

  • I would say call every doctor you can until you can get someone to run the blood test. Call the OB back and absolutely insist, due to your history. Keep asking for another supervisor until they just give in. Heck, go down to the office if you have to. The other option would be to call your fertility doc that you were seeing. I bet they could get you right in. If all else fails, call your primary doctor. One of those is bound to get you in for a quick blood test. I think the fertility doc might be the fastest.

    Congratulations!

  • Congratulations!  I would definitely call your OB and ask for a test and, if it's on the low side, get some sort of progesterone supplements.  If you cannot get a prescription, there are some OTC progesterone creams you can get (marketed for post menopausal women).

  • First of all, congratulations!

As for your question, I would call your OB and leave a message asking about the Progesterone. While he may not see you for an exam, he should be able to get in touch with you and answer this. If you were on it before then I would ask for it.

    Welcome to the board!!

  • I remember you!! It's so nice to see you here. :) (I'm an old-timer, too - 38. :)

I would def. call your doc and explain your concern/history and I'm sure they would run betas on your progesterone.

    Congratulations!
