Two Under 2

VBAC and RCS, come in please..

Just curious, those who had a c/s with their first, were you able to go VBAC with your second?  Or, if you were a rcs, were you scheduled early?

My OB said since there will be exactly 12 months in between deliveries, I'd have to be a rcs and they would schedule me to deliver at 38w.

I'm really not a fan of this.  DS was born at 38w due to Pre-E induction.. he spent a week in NICU.  Though I know every baby is different, I can't help but think had he not been delivered at 38w, his NICU stay may not have existed..

Thoughts?

Re: VBAC and RCS, come in please..

  • My doctor was open to the option of vbac under pretty strict standards (no induction, had to go into labor naturally prior to my EDD) but I ultimately ended up with a RCS. If a doctor was trying to push me into a c-section at 38 weeks I would find a new doctor. It's one thing if you're showing signs of pre-E again and it's medically necessary but RCS at 38 weeks just because are a bad idea. I had my LO at 39.5 weeks via RCS. I wanted to be as close to my EDD as possible.

  • I just had a VBAC with my baby boy, 18 months after my c section with DD. It was night and day...I felt almost 100 after giving birth this time, and my baby and I have had no complications whatsoever. I highly recommend VBAC, at least try it. I am able to care for both my kids 3 days pp. It really does take a supportive Dr, and I was so glad I switched ob practices. All worth it.

  • I chose to have a RCS.  Mostly because I had a great recovery the 1st time.  This time it was a little harder, dealing with an active toddler.  By day 5 I was able to pick DD up, and I was able to move around without pain or stiffness.

My OB scheduled my RCS for 39 wks.  I thought that was the earliest they would do a c/s now unless you have complications.

  • The main factor is because there will be less than 12 months between the births.  He's afraid that if I were to contract, it could cause my ute to rupture.  I'm definitely going to be discussing this more and more throughout the pregnancy, as I'd want more than anything to avoid having an early baby.. just wasn't sure what the standards were.. is there anyone who can provide insight that was ~12 months apart?  18 months is a completely different story -- 18 months, and my OB fully supports VBAC..

This is good to hear!! This is what I'm "hoping" for.. let me try and go into labor naturally, and labor naturally, and if we see any problems, then do rcs.. but, I don't want to rule out VBAC right away.. and, I certainly don't want to agree to early c/s for no reason!  Thanks for this :)

  • My first two are 15 months apart. My obs do not like doing a vbacs unless there is at least 18 months between. They will let you try but they monitor you very closely. Either way my office requires you to go into labor on our own and will only allow you to go a week over due. With all that I had no desie for a vbac so had a c/s at 39 weeks. My obs and hospital does not allow c/s before 39wks unless there is a major medical reason - rcs is not. I had easy recoveries from all three of mine. This last me was by far the easiest.

  • I had a c/s with #1 at 38 weeks.  With #2 at my 37 week appointment, I was developing pre-e, so we decided to do a rpt c/s.  DD was born at 37 weeks.  Neither of my kids spent time in the NICU. Had I nnot developed pre-e, I was scheduled at 39 weeks for my rpt c/s.

I'm also an L&D nurse, we see many babies born pre-term, even 34 weekers that don't have NICU time.  I wouldn't necessarily think had you not had him at 38 weeks you would have avoided the NICU stay, it depends why he was there.

  • My first son spent a night in the NICU and he was born vaginally at 41 weeks.  My second son was breech and I had a scheduled csection 10 days before his due date.  He spent no time in the NICU.   I don't think you should assume that if you have a RCS at 38 weeks, your baby will automatically spend time in the NICU.  When I asked my doctor if there were any risks to getting pregnant so quickly after the first (DS2 was not planned).  She said no since you didn't have a csection.  I think you're going to have a tough time finding a doctor that will do a VBAC so quickly after your first.  Maybe you can talk to the doctor about having the RCS closer to 39 weeks.
  • I was torn between rcs and vbac. So I decided to agree to a VBAC if I went into labor before my 40 week mark. My first was due to fetal distress after being induced at 41 weeks due to low amniotic fluid. Well I went into labor at 39 weeks and wound up w/ RCS after 20 hours of labor. My doctor was very pro VBAC (actually anti RCS). It was 17 months between deliveries. She said she has had hundreds of VBACs w/ no uterine rupture. But I kind of wish I just had the RCS. Because going through all that labor and then winding up w/ a c-section was terrible. And it would have been much nicer to plan around that to begin w/. I kind of leaned toward wanting a c-section except for the recovery just because that was what I knew. But I also really didn't want to have the baby before the baby was ready. So that was why I wouldn't schedule it before 40 weeks...basically all this is to tell you that if you have to have a c-section you can probably have one later. I know a lot of doctors won't do VBAC w/ less than 12 months between pregnancies. I was in NYC w/ a progressive doctor who had done a bunch of VBACs before "they changed the rules" as she put it.

  • I intended a VBAC with DS but I never went into labor with DD.  She was taken at 42w1d.  There was an undiagnosed placenta acreta so I thought maybe that was why I'd not gone into labor.  I never softened up or anything with DS and so as we got closer my OB said that I could wait but to keep in mind that I couldn't go past 41-42 weeks and he wouldn't induce me.  I decided that I'd just go ahead and do another c-secition.  This time I'm not even thinking about a VBAC.  I'll have a 3rd c-section and hope my recovery is as awesome as the last two have been.
