Repair Kit for drop down crib Question

We still had our crib from when DS was a baby, but it had a drop down side. We were able to order a repair kit for free that stabilizes the drop down with screws and heavy duty seatbelt-like straps. It keeps the side in place very securely, but my question is this:

Has anyone used the repair kit successfully? What I mean by this is that the seatbelt like straps are at the top of the side, where the baby could reach them once they are old enough to pull themselves up. There is no chance of them coming apart, but my main concern would be them mouthing on it or scratching themselves on it or something.
