February 2012 Moms

I remembered my fffc.

Do I start my own fffc every week? I need to write these down.

Here it is: if you use the word retarded inappropriately  (I.e. in a derogatory fashion) I judge you. And I am likely to think you are ignorant. That crap is for middle schoolers. Flame away.

  • I agree with this 100%. This is one of the things that makes me delete people on facebook.

  • 100 percent agreed. I'm teacher and it makes me cringe when I hear colleagues use the word.

  • I'm not proud of it and I know it's wrong but it's a hard habit to break from childhood. Never at work or in front of Olivia but I do find myself saying it to my husband sometimes. But never related to a person, always an action. Not that it makes it any better. I'm surprised I'm admitting this but hey, it's been an odd day around here.

i have worked with other teachers who have said it, quite casually. Not where I am now, thank God.

  • Yes!  I cringe when I hear it, especially when it's another adult saying it.  Another word that gets me is "crippled", although it's usually the older generations that say it.

Yup the special ed teacher at my school is good at calling them out on it and ending it.

If you're not referring to people it's not that bad.

And in response to the original post. I totally agree; however, ignorant people can make any term insulting. I see the terms special needs and handicapped becoming used in very negative ways and that is how retarded became insulting. Am I making sense? I didn't get much sleep, so ask for clarity if you need to lol.
