If your LO is a peanut come in

I know this gets asked all the time but until now it hasn't really applied to O. At O's well check today we were told he is now considered under weight and we need to work on getting his weight up. Help me please.

Here are some obstacles we have to work around. O has a peanut and milk allergy so some of the things I would eat to gain weight he can't have. I was thinking maybe adding some pediasure but that has milk protein in it so that is a no go. He alright with yogurt but he can only eat so much of that. Most cheese is ok but he's not really a fan. Pretty much all other dairy is a no-go.

Also, I want to try and keep it healthy and not give him junk for the sake of him getting the extra calories.

So, wise Dec Mamas, please teach me you tricks.

Re: If your LO is a peanut come in

  • My kids are allergic to the protein whey in Cow's milk and DS2 is also underweight. So we try to sneak in fattening foods and extra snacks.
The boys usually drink Rice Milk but since there isn't much fat in it, we also give them Coconut Milk. For breakfast, they get cereal and a coconut milk yogurt ,the brand is called So Delicious.
For snacks we do alot of avacados, bananas, oatmeal with fruit, apple crisp, smoothies, ham and rice cheese "rollups", avacado spread on crackers, and potatoes in various forms.
  • Loading the player...
  • I struggle with this too. A is also underweight, and he also is allergic to peanuts and soy, so peanut butter and pediasure are out.  He also just eats like sh!t, probably like any toddler, but if he loses like, an ounce, his ribs stick out!

We put cream in his bottles, but I know that O allergic...maybe have him drink something with soy protein?

Honestly, I let him eat french fries. Nope, not the healthiest, but he does eat them. I don't add salt, at least!

But yeah, looking for ideas too. How much does O weigh? A is 22.5 pounds.

  • Rink thanks for the ideas.

Jilly he is just over 25lbs. He's actually lost a lttle weight, around a pound, since he's been sick for the last month. His ribs are definitely sticking out right now. He's always been on the thin side but it is getting to be really obvious the older he gets.

  • This s a constant struggle for us.  I shudder to think what the ped is going o say next visit.

I second the add avocados and  gaucamole as well as coconut oil to everything.

Holy Crap. If he's underweight at 25 pounds, what's my son at 22.5????

  • N's tiny, but his height/weight measure out, so we don't try to shove too much extra food down him.  He is allergic to peanuts and dairy as well.  However, it's a lactose issue with Nate, not an actual "allergy", so he can have the lactose free whole milk (Walmart!) and lactose free yogurt.  Have you ever tried those?  They still get the fat without the lactose.  Ever since we switched him over, we've had a new kid who isn't vomitting or having diarrhea or reflux!  As for the peanuts, they sell sunflower seed butter that supposedly is a lot like peanut butter.  We tried something similar, a non-nut product and he immediately broke out in hives, so there went that for us.  Nate pretty much lives on fruit and won't eat veggies, so we just let him have as much fresh fruit as he can eat and sometimes those sqeeze pouches of veggies (which he'll eat).  He also loves cereal bars.  I'm not sure how healthy they really are, but no worse than the suggestion of french fries. :)

  • what about things like: oatmeal, pasta, meatballs/meatloaf, chicken nuggets? Those are some hearty things that DS will eat..well, all of them except the chicken nuggets, lol. I bought a huge bag of dinosaur shaped ones thinking they'd be fun for him to eat & he wasn't impressed.

I still make him a pan toasted cheese & tomato quesadilla about once a week. I serve it with avocado & sour cream. Maybe O will eat the cheese if it's cooked inside like that?

DS is about 25 lbs, too - I call him my skinny little man. His well visit isn't till next month...I wonder if the pedi will be concerned :/

  • I'm on my phone, so the title of your post is "if your LO is a pean." Lol Sorry, I'm 12...

I put Alfredo sauce on pasta or tortilini for Avery. Not terribly healthy, but she eats it and it has a lot of calories.

  • We don't have any allergies here, but my LO is a peanut. He's probably about 24-25lb? Our well child visit isn't till the 12th, so I'll see what the pedi says. He's also short too, so he's probably fine.

For calories, what about olive oil on his veggies if he'll eat them. Yogurt dip with fruit, rice cheese sandwiches, pizza with rice cheese, Avocados? (I know my kids hate them though) Maybe some pancakes you made yourself and sneak some extras in there?

I don't have many ideas.... my LO is a shittty eater- he likes fruit, pizza, chicken nuggets, breakfast food, and that's about it!

  • Well, I'm in a different position since my DD has always been super small and her pedi thinks that she is just built that way, so I've never really been encouraged to bulk her up, just make sure she gets to eat/drink frequently.

I would focus on making sure he gets enough protein and healthy fats. So pediasure isn't great, anyway.

    Does he eat meat?

A good source of healthy fat is olive oil which can be added easily to pasta, vegetables, drizzled over most meals, etc. Also, coconut oil can be melted and mixed with fresh or frozen fruit. If your LO can handle smoothies, make them with full fat greek yogurt and some coconut oil mixed in. Talk about a (healthy) calorie bomb. Id try to stay away from "fluff" calories like crackers, etc, that fill you up but don't give much nutrition. Go for nutritionally dense foods like avocados, vegetable oils, fruit like bananas that are denser than other fruits. If LO can have alternate nut butters, like almond or sunbutter you can put those on apples, etc.

Good luck! Encourage, but don't force! I truly think that force feeding kids will lead to more issues than being slightly underweight, anyway.

  • DS is 22lbs and DD is 21lbs. We don't have the allergies so they drink a lot of whole milk and pediasure. Sme other things we do though is cook with olive oil whenever possible, protein powder in a fruit smoothie (usually just strawberries, bananas and ice), butter on whatever we can, and we also don't really deny then snacking. If they want pretzels at 7pm, they get them and I just rebrush their teeth. I know that's probably not the healthiest eating habits to start, but we need the weight on.

  • Thanks ladies, I appreciate all the ideas.

I think the pedi got on me this time about his weight is because he has been slowly dropping percentiles for a while. I'm guessing that if he had stayed around the same on the charts it wouldn't be that big of a deal. O is usually in the 75percentile or higher for height too. Since he is taller it is pretty obvious how small he is weight wise.

Anyway, he loves guacamole so we'll just do more of that and start making other things with avacados. He also gets soy milk so we'll just give him a little more of that too. I'll probably have to get creative with the other suggestions since he's been really picky lately.

  • We struggle with both boys weight here too. They recommended pediasure for o as well but I don't like it. I make smoothies for him at home. My acupuncturist gave me the tip to use coconut milk or hemp milk instead of rice milk. Hemp milk is super healthy. Lots of nutrients.. Whereas rice milk is pretty empty. I would add a coconut yogurt to it... Bananas...and a nut butter if he can tolerate any nuts besides peanuts. Can he do almond butter? I put his vitamin in it. Oliver sucks these down! He calls it a chocolate smoothie even though there is no chocolate in it! I don't correct him. Ha!

The other things he loves are cashews and pistachios. Can Oliver eat those nuts if you found them at a health store which ensured they did not touch peanuts?
We don't have the peanut allergy issue so I'm kind of in the dark about it.

Eta: I also add olive oil to anything possible. I'd rather do this than butter.

Another eta: I put tofu in the smoothie as well.

One more! Quinoa with olive oil instead of rice. I serve it with pinto beans. For some reason Oliver likes pinto beans and lentils but not other beans.
  • DS is a peanut as well. He has been seeing a nutritionist and a GI specialist b/c he is struggling with pretty severe constipation (for over a year now). He has been tested for just about every allergy but all of his tests have come back normal.

I do give pediasure, sometimes 2x a day if he doesn't hit his calorie target for the day. I also make smoothies and make sure to add avocado to it. I also add veggie oil (nutritionist told us to avoid olive b/c of the flavor) to anything I can add it too. Think a teaspoon was an extra 100cal??? (I have it written down)

DS is 23lbs and just under 33" tall. My son doesn't have a lot of teeth yet so I cannot give the cashews or pistachios. DS is a super picky eater, but now that we are getting his constipation under control (have to give Miralax daily) his appetite is finally picking up. He got a nasty stomach bug a few days ago (was throwing up and has had diarrhea since) so of course he isn't wanting to eat.

His weight is always stressing me out. The good news was the nutritionist said we no longer have to come since, after working with the GI specialist, we seemed to find a plan that is working. We will see where he is at his 2yr checkup in a few months. I am praying he gets into the 24lb range.

Hey, don't hate on the fries! Maybe I'm hand-cutting them from organic potatoes and pan frying them in extra virgin olive oil!

I mean, I'm totally just getting them from Wendy's, but still. Stick out tongue

I gave mine fried okra and fried chicken today. Smile  I loooove fries.  Totally not judging the fries as long as no one judges the daily cereal bar made from god knows what (pretty sure it's not actually fruit.)
