Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Saving tissue from miscarriage?

In the book What to Expect When You're Expecting it says to save the tissue from the miscarriage so that it can be looked at to see if it is complete. Has anyone actually done that and did you take it to the doctor? Do they run any tests on it or do they just treat it as medical waste?

  • My first mc I saved tissue and my doc office would not take it because it was my first and they take tissue for research after the third mc. Instead they sent a lady over who buried the tissue with one months worth of other pre-20mo gestation tissue. Weird but I had no clue what was normal.

  • With my 2nd miscarriage my dr asked me if I saved mine but I didn't because I didn't know. I'd ask your dr also...I'm sorry for your loss..
  • My OB didn't tell me to save it so I didn't. My understanding is that Kaiser won't test anything until after the 3rd m/c.

  • I haven't given them tissue with either of my m/c. This last one I might've, but apparently I only m/c on Saturday nights and it wouldn't have been in good condition come Monday. I will for sure if I have a third mc...fx it doesn't come to that.

With both of my mc, they confirmed all had passed via an ultrasound.

  • i was actively miscarrying at the ER and went to the bathroom and passed tissue and they didn't tell me until after the fact that I should not have flushed and I should have saved it (I had no idea...i mean never been in this situation before). so the next day at home when I did pass something I managed to grab it and put it in a sealed ziploc and I brought it with me the next time I had an hcg  test (4 days later)  and they took it to pathology. I got a call a couple days later explaining what it was.  They didn't expressly tell me to save it but they said I "should if I could".
  • Hi everyone..
I recently had a MC at 7 weeks and took the sac to the ER. They told me immediately that most times when you have a natural MC and no DC they are not able to get any results from the pathology report. Unfortunately they were right. I got a call from my OB a few days later letting me know that they didn't have enough tissue even though they had the entire sac. So don't feel too bad that you didn't save it because they might not of been able to test anyway...
  • Since this was my first loss it would've been too expensive to pay for. If, God forbide, I have two more losses then my insurance would pay for that to be done.

So to answer your question no I didn't have the tissue tested.
