Re: 3yr old boy
Go to Amazon, and you can create a registry of things you think your child might like/need. Personally, I think it is a little tacky, but it seems all my friends are doing it (does that mean I have tacky friends???). DD1 loves her leappad thing that's like a tablet for kids, but I worry that it makes kids antisocial. Or, you could say you are saving to buy a big ticket item, like a swingset, which is what I would love for my girls, instead of clothes and toys they don't need, and maybe they could contribute to that? My BIL and SIL always ask us to give money instead of a gift because their kids always want some big ticket item for their birthdays (8 yo nephew wanted a mini iPad; I thought it was ridiculous, but we did it anyway).
HTH.
I totally disagree about the amazon wish list being tacky- as someone who has 9 nieces & nephews on MHs side & spent YEARS asking for every birthday & xmas please give me some ideas & getting nothing from them most of hte time, I would have been thrilled to be able to use something like an amazon wish list. So, I have one & only tell ppl about it if they ask me for ideas. Mostly my mom &bro use it and last bday my SIL did too. I do not publicize/advertise it to anyone or offer it up to ppl unless they ask though. Plus it helps keep me organized & I know if things have been purchased so I don't get them too.
But I don't think that was your question, so here are some ideas of things my son loves (turned 3 in aug) though it depends on what your LO is into:
trains- wooden train sets & tracks & the accessory things.
trucks- bruder brand is awesommmmmeeee but it depends on what you want to spend.
other vehicle things- imaginext makes some cool planes that are inexpensive, not sure what else they have. he loves matchbox/hot wheels cars too. i got some hot wheels tracks but they are beyond his ability and frankly kind of beyond mine too LOL.
Floor puzzles & regular puzzles- at this age he does 24 piece melissa& doug puzzles pretty well but still a little bit of a challenge. M&D makes good floor puzzles too.
Tools & duplos like pp said
We got a ton of games for 3rd bday and DD will play most of htem but DS does not have the focus/attention span for most games, with the exception of zingo, which is fun & not annoying to play for the adults either (unlike candyland or chutes & ladders...OMG....)> we love Richard Scarry & Busytown and the Busytown game is pretty fun too.
Richard Scarry books- DS LOVES them. Loves. Pages through them forever.
He is starting to get into spiderman which is so strange b/c we never watch it at home & haven't had anything with it but I guess he got it from school...?
We got them M&D beanbag toss & a little bowling set for their bday and thought they'd love it but I think I like playing both more than they do...but I think they'll grow into them & when we have our basement finished we will be able to have them out more.
Magazine subscription? we're trying out high five this year- last year we got animal baby which they enjoyed- reading through it, finding the hidden stuff, etc.
Speaking of hidden stuff, we're recently into the I spy books & anything wher eyou have to find/spy things in the pictures. They also make some that are easier than eye spy- i think they're called look & find books.
