DS hates being in the Moby...

I want to wear baby around the house during the day, but he seems to hate being in the wrap. I have tried a couple different holds (cradle, hug) but he pushes out and throws his head back to look around so I end up having to hold the back of his head. Not so hands free. After about ten minutes he will usually start crying to I take him out and he is fine. I have considered trying the Ergo but don't want to waste a lot of money if he will hate that too.

I planned to wear my son since before he was born so this kind of bums me out. Are there some kids that just don't like to be worn? Has anyone experienced this? Were you able to find something that your LO enjoyed being in? TIA

Re: DS hates being in the Moby...

  • Sorry, im a mobile user, so I can't see if you have a siggy, but how old is your LO? If you bf, I would suggest trying to bf while wearing so that he gets used to the carrier while being comforted. Also, if my dd gets fussy, I will sway or bounce her a bit and she usually calms down. I think overall, just keep trying to put him in it and hopefully he will get used to it!

  • Many babies aren't content to be worn unless movement is involved - walking or bouncing on a ball are good things to try.

Are you doing the legs out hug hold?  If not, I would definitely do that as it may make a difference.

I'd also try wearing for things like going on a walk - it's a new experience so it may take some adjusting for him.

  • He is 8 weeks old. I do bf but am very large chested so I think nursing in it would be a challenge logistically. ;)

He does seem to do better if we are grocery shopping or something. I think you ladies are right on about the movement. I will just keep trying and wear him on some walks and bounce him around as much as I can until he gets used to it.

    Thanks for the advice!

  • Mine never adjusted to the wrap or the sling. I spent a LOT of unnecessary $. I was fearful my baby wouldn't be worn and I was desperate to wear him, so I finally tried a baby bjorn (Iknow, I know) some friends loaned us and he actually tolerated that for a few weeks until he fit in the becco gemini which he loves! I wouldn't give up till you try 20+ times!
  • Every baby is different, and every month is different.  DD hated being worn in anything but a forward-facing bjorn or pikkolo for months.  And then it was straight to being on my back so she could look around.  It wasn't until more like a year and a half that she was ok with facing in on my front.  weird child.

Keep trying over time, keep trying different carriers (find a local group with a lending library of carriers if you can), and be patient.  I found wearing was so much better once DD got head control, and then again way better when she was able to have enough core support for back carries.

  • My LO hated the Ergo until I discovered I could get him to go to sleep if I bounced on a ball or danced him around a bit. He is rarely awake when I wear him now. He slept through a parade this morning with extremely loud sirens and motorcycles. Keep trying and I'm sure you'll find something that works! Good luck!

  • DD had to have movement to be content in the Moby. Now she is to busy to tolerate it unless we are in public and can people watch.

  • My DS also likes to be worn while I am moving walking, rocking, bouncing, swinging and then he usually falls asleep. He only liked the hug hold so I would definitely recommend trying that.

  • My DS had a love/hate relationship with being worn.  Sometimes he would wiggle, fuss or crane so much it became dangerous, so I had different stations in the rooms we were in most often.  That way I had safe places to put him where he could still be close, but not so confined.  Other times he couldn't stand to be away from me- he loved being worn while I swept the floors or when we went on walks, shopping, etc. like pps mentioned.  He did eventually prefer the stroller though, because he had a better view.  He's 2yo now & is still pretty independent, but still loves to cuddle... on his terms.  I learned his cues and let him take the lead on when to wear him, and now when to snuggle him, and I cherish the heck out of those times.  I hope you two find a happy balance, too!

This. DS wouldn't be worn at all for the first 2 months and then he only liked a pouch sling (cradle hold) while out running errands until he grew into a buddha hold and then the ring sling hug hold or hip carry (the ring sling was by far our favorite until he outgrew it). He rarely tolerated the moby and almost never liked being worn inside the house. I would keep trying different things outside of the house and see how that goes.

  • Another carrier may work. But, some babies just don't want to be worn. We all have expectations that we bring to our LOs (like wanting to wear them).  Sometimes, we just have to adjust to the child we have and let go of what we want.

  • My LO only liked the MOBY if I was walking... otherwise he wanted out... maybe that is a factor?

  • I gave up on the Moby. DD2 hated it. I gave it to a friend, and her baby absolutely loved it. When DD2 was around 6 months, we went on vacation and bought an Ergo to use. She liked that one up until about a year. Mostly though she wants to be carried and not worn. I'm planning to buy a ring sling for DD3 and hope that will work better. I've read that it's easier to nurse in one.

When baby was younger, we had to support his head and pat his bottom for him to relax in the Moby.  My husband called it "arms-free" rather than hands free.  No weight on our arms, but our hands were still occupied.  GL, as baby ages, his preferences will change, and hopefully he'll start to love it!
