Hahaha...I never really thought about it. I guess I use both? But lollipop is better, I have to say.
One of my best friends ("B") offered to be our surrogate, and we're now expecting a baby in April 2013 after two cycles of natural IUI at the Jones Institute. For medical reasons, we are not biologically related to our unborn child. Yes, I guess that makes this a "planned adoption."
Waiting for our Miracle Baby, Carly Marie, Due April 24, 2013!
But...but, when you say "that poor sucker" you are not talking about a sweet treat.
Dh just tried to tell me a sucker is a small "dum dum" sized one you would get at the bank drive through for your kid and a lollipop is a big one, like a Tootsie pop.
SMH.
Lollipop. But in NZ, they call all candies lollies, so it was always confusing when people asked if I wanted a lollie and I said no because what grown ass woman wants a lollipop, you know?
I wll be teaching my daughter that the word is Lollipop.
I can't say the other word without saying SUCKAAAAA and that just doesn't work for what you're talking about.

who doesn't want a lollipop???? I love me some lollipop.
Lollipop reminds me of the creepy child-catcher character in the movie "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" so I usually call them suckers. I do agree with the previous poster who said the flat, round ones are technically lollipops, and the small, round ball on a stick are technically suckers.
Funny story: My grandmother tells of a time when she took her 3 yr old son to the grocery store one day. On the counter was a huge jar of suckers. At the time, he kept mixing up S sounds and F sounds. Well, they got up to the counter and he loudly shouted in a crowd of people, "Mom, look at all the F******ers!" She never took him shopping again, haha!
I use "lollipop" but the people around me routinely use the word "sucker," and I abhor it. If it were a sucker it would be sucking you. Also, I associate the word with sucking as in "being really awful," as in, "you really suck at this," KWIM?
Besides, the song doesn't go, "Sucker, sucker, oh sucker, sucker, sucker." That just sounds dirty and wrong. It's lollipop, d@mmit.

Big, flat and round = Lollipop.
Small, ball on a stick that can fit in your mouth is a sucker.

// I love you too. //
I've always used "lollipop," but hear "sucker" used just as often.
Maybe it's a regional thing, like soda v. pop?
I agree!
