Breastfeeding

Seeming to produce less?

When I pumped when I first started breastfeeding I would get somewhere around 5oz every time from each breast. Now, a month later, when I pump I BARELY get 3 oz out of BOTH. Baby is gaining weight still, but I'm concerned she's not getting enough to eat and that's why she's fussy. (Ped hasn't said anything because her weight gain is good and ignores that she's fussy.)

I'm wondering if she's getting what she needs and I just can't pump it? But I'm looking to bottle feed BM when I go out, so how do I increase milk production?

(She had a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance so I had to start feeding every three hours, one breast at a time. (1st feeding, left. 2nd feeding, left. 3rd, right. etc) She also sleeps through the night now, so I'm not feeding or pumping all night.)

  • It sounds like baby is doing fine.  You may have had an oversupply that has corrected itself.  The baby is always better at removing milk from the breast than the pump.

    This.

3oz from a pump in addition to feeding is on the high end of normal.

You'll want to pump before and after you go out, and if you can get 3oz in a pumping session, then it should only take one or two sessions to make a bottle for baby (3-4oz bottles are normal for BF babies).

Omg, really? Thank you so much for your help. I'm literally about to cry reading this. I was panicing! Phew!
