HELP!!! on multiple topics!!

My LO is 8wks old. Our first issue is he likes to comfort suck, but won't take a paci.  Sometimes he gets so worked up it I give in and allow him to use me.  Well I plan on returning to work soon and I don't know what to do for him.  Next he still stays awake more at night and the only way to get him to sleep at night is to allow him to comfort suck.   I am exhausted my nipples are sore and I am at  loss.

Next I will be returning to work soon and I will work 7p-8a.  What type of pumping schedule and bottle schedule should I start?  I want him to get use to the bottle and such before I go back to work.

Re: HELP!!! on multiple topics!!

  • Have you tried different pacifiers? DD would only take soothies at first then officially took Nuks.

If I'm tired I'll lay DD next to me in bed and both of us lay on our sides so she can suck while I sleep.

I'd pump after each feeding. Try keeping LO on one side as long as you can so you can pump alot out of the opposite side.

  • This isn't really helpful but DS wouldn't take a paci and also loved to comfort suck. We sent a paci to daycare and he now takes one. I'm not a huge fan of it but I knew he needed something when I wasn't around. He really only uses it for naps or sleeping at home sometimes. He uses the Avent ones and would choke on the other brands.

You'll need to pump at work to replace feedings. I assume you'll need to sleep when you get home as well so I'm not sure if your LO will be at a sitters during the day or with you.

This...maybe try some different brands.  I had a bunch of Tommy Tippee and DD never liked them.  She started with Soothies as well and now will only take a Nuk.  Maybe try that??

Not sure about the pumping since I'm SAHM.  GL!

  • Yes, Make sure you try different paci's. I thought my little one wasn't a paci. turns out, I wasn't offering him the right size. He also takes NUK's.  Hopefully the sitter you are leaving him with will be patient with him as he transitions and he will adjust to not comfort sucking, i promise.

Try pumping about an hour after your last nursing - 2 hours before the next feeding,  to build a stash. Or  on a weekend Pump right before a feeding and then feed the baby that bottle.  You also might have to try different nipples if he is picky with bottles too.  I was worried for M's first bottle but he took it like a champ and slept great. We used Dr. Browns for our rare bottle feeding. He has never had an issue going back and forth.

I see that you are working nights. Usually you would pump to replace a feeding. so if he wake up 2 times then you would pump 2 times.  but basically if he eats 12 ounces during the time you are gone then you want to replace those 12 ounces with pumping. People respond to the pump differently.  You might need 3 session others can make that in one.  Good Luck! It is worth it and it is only for a short time in your life when you look back.
