Breastfeeding

night time?

During the day my lo eats off both sides, about 20 min each. For a few nights her early am feeding she would fall asleep after one side. Should I pump the other at that point? Then...last night she slept for 6.5 hrs not gonna complain about that!! But I woke up dripping milk. Should I have pumped in the middle of the night, or will my body adjust to what she's doing?

Re: night time?

  • Answers kind of depend on what you want, or are going to do....If you want to build a freezer stash then I would pump as often as she gives you the opportunity. You don't have to do it,  and your body will adjust, but I wish I had pumped more early on to make my body thin k I needed more milk. So I could now pump more during the day.

I went back to work at 4 months and it has been dificult to keep up with DD's demand because I respond so poorly to the pump. I end up having to get up and pump in the middle of the night now because I need those four ounces...and she has been STTN for a few months. Plus I stress on the days she doesn't STTN and wants to eat since I don't get that pumping session I needed.

If you already know you can pump a good amount (4-6oz.) per session, or you are not going back to work but will be a SAHM and rarely need to pump then I would just enjoy the gift of sleep and not pump right now when your baby sleeps a bit longer.

  • Ditto the above. If you're uncomfortable, I would just hand express until you're no longer in pain.

  • Thanks ladies. I am going back to work in 5 weeks, so guess I should probably start working on saving some. That sleep sure was nice last night though!!
