foremilk/hindmilk imbalance

For months I have been trying to help my son get through reflux but he didn't fully fit the criteria so I started looking further when I noticed green stool.
he fits the exact symptoms of a milk imbalance. has anyone else had this issue? what were your methods to fixing it?

Re: foremilk/hindmilk imbalance

  • Finish one boob before you offer the second. That's really all there is to it - try re-offering the same boob once before you switch sides.

  • Do you have an oversupply? Does it feel like LO never fully drains your breast? If so, it is very possible that you have an imbalance. Try feeding LO off the same breast for two feedings in a row (block feeding). That will ensure he is getting the fatty hindmilk and not just the thirst quenching foremilk. If you get engorged on the side not being used you can hand express to relieve some of the pressure.

  • Yes I never feel empty and keep getting engorged on the other breast. Will feeding on one breast at a time fix this as well? I was feeding off both breasts prior to this week.

Yes. Block feeding will lower your supply so you don't keep getting engorged and LO will be able to actually drain your breasts before he gets too full.

Thank you for the help! How did I create over production so I don't do it again!

Do you pump at all? How old is LO? It's pretty common to have an oversupply in the beginning while your milk supply is still regulated by hormones instead of supply and demand. Some women just seem to make lots of milk though, me being one of them!

Its nice to know others are fighting the same battle. I feel so bad that I have just been feeding him incorrectly and he probably doesn't have reflux. He has not spit up so far today and usually he is sick and refuses to eat or only eats for a minute and is latching on and off in frustration

  • I started nursing one side at a time and this helped. If I still felt really full on the other side after he finished I would occassionally pumped, but that only happened the first couple times. After that, I adjusted really well to alternating sides with each feed.

  • My LO had the same problem. I began to feed her every three hours with one breast at a time. (1st feeding, left breast. 2nd feeding, left breast. 3rd, right. and so on.) That made her imbalance correct itself.
  • Thank you so much for all the help I have already started seeing a difference! I feel so bad that we have been struggling for so long for no reason!
