Gnawing at fist all the time - should I be worried?

I am starting to freak out now. DD is almost 11 weeks and lately she never seems satisfied. I EBF, pump maybe once or twice a week when she sleeps really long stretches at night. And she is putting her first in her mouth all the time. Sometimes she's crying and gnawing at it (like today when I left for two hours to go run errands). So when I went to feed her she latched on for a little bit then tried to get her fist in her mouth again. I felt three let downs...not sure if that means anything.

At her 6 week visit, she was gaining great, above average.

  • Is she teething? Sometimes babies start feeling pressure in their gums and want to chew on their hands way before the teeth actually come up. (which would explain why she latched and then went for her hand instead) just a thought...

  • My LO did the same thing at that age. I think that is when the discover their hands and want to play with them all the time. Play equals mouth. Feet come next, also in the mouth! It probably isn't hunger if LO is still gaining and making enough wet and dirty diapers.

  • I agree, I seem to remember DD doing that a lot at that age. Seemed like her hands were always in her mouth!

  • I agree with all the pp..DS started doingthat too...probably around the same time. He is 14 weeks now and is still doing it. I have started to see if he will root...it seems to be a better indicator. DS also is pretty scheduled at this point and eats every 2.5 to 3 hours....so I just keep an eye on the clock and wait for him to root!
