Baby Nails

Or should I saw claws. Chloe loves to dig her tiny fingers into the exposed skin on my chest/neck when I'm feeding her or holding her. DAMN those things are sharp! I try to keep filing them down, which is hard because of the fist making reflex they have right now. I'm still too afraid to cut them. Her pedi said we're good to go after 3 months old. And shes three months... but I can't.

Does anyone clip their LOs nails yet?

Re: Baby Nails

  • It takes a half an hour with lots of breaks but I clip Mina's nails. It's a lot easier now that her hands aren't always in permafists.

  • I've been clipping Evie's nails for two months. They grow long and hard quickly, so they're pretty easy to cut.

I did accidently pinch her a few nights ago - not clip, though. I usually do a pre-squeeze to make sure I don't have any skin, and I must have got her a little because she jumped, and then had a freakout because she had been sleeping.

  • I clip hers. It's hard and she screams through it. But so does my two year old. Better than ten tiny razors.

This. I do Madi's when she's feeding and we sort of look like a circus act. Sometimes I can do the whole hand no problem, other times she retracts her arm every time I grab it. I also make sure the clipper is down in her nailbed, without any side skin in there a few times before clipping. I've gotten her once, no blood, but I felt awful and she wasn't happy.

  • I do it while he's nursing. I can do damned near anything to him while he's eating.

I do one hand per boob. Lol. So I do the other hand 3 hours later when he's hungry again.

  • I tried filing for the first two months because I was really paranoid about making him bleed and he screams bloody murder if I so much as touch one of his fingers, but the filing really didn't do much and his face was constantly getting scratched up unless I kept his mittens on 24/7. He wakes up if I try doing his nails in his sleep, so I make DH feed him while I clip his nails. I've made him bleed, but I'd rather he have that temporary sting than have his face and arms all scratched up.
  • I got pretty lucky here.   DD nails grow so fast but she has yet to really scratch herself.  My sitter (who is like my sister, and is also family) actually clipped them for me.   She said DD was so happy laying on her changing table that she just clipped them then and DD didn't mind at all.   She also said it took her like 2 minutes.   I am still to scared but she does it and I appreciate it so much.

  • I have to clip Alivia's nails. They are like little razors after 3 or 4 days.  I either wait until she is asleep or DF does it while I am feeding her.

  • I do it while he's sleeping on my chest, while sitting up.  I can do both sides that way and quick.  SO MUCH EASIER when they're sleeping!

  • Yep, I've been clipping Sam's nails since about a month old - before I would just bite them, or they would kind of peel off.  Try to do it when she's sleeping - their hands are more relaxed and not flailing about!  I've done it when he's awake a couple times and it's much easier when he's sleeping.  So far no bleeding!

  • I've been clipping them from the beginning. Never caused him or my daughter to bleed.

  • We have clipped since the beginning because DD has always loved having her hands by her face and kept scratching herself. SO got some of the skin from a few fingers early on and I was pissed but they healed pretty quickly. It is definitely a 2 person job now, one to distract her while the other person cuts.

  • We've been clipping since about a month old. DH usually does it while LO is nursing or sleeping. If he's nursing, DH gets on the side he can reach and clips, then waits for me to switch boobs and does the other hand. His nails grow at an incredible rate and have to be clipped every couple days or he's back to clawing himself and me. Th worst is when he tries to claw my nipple, ouch! DH only nicked him once in the very beginning, now he's a baby nail cutting pro.

  • I've clipped LO's nails from the beginning.  I do it when he's sleeping, nursing, or "milk drunk," and I've never clipped his skin.  I take my time and don't stress if I don't get all of his nails trimmed in one session.  I also make sure that I have a good light source.

  • All of the time. I do it on the changing pad and lean over into his face and talk to him the entire time. He doesn't mind it and doesn't really move too much.

Yup, same here. Just do it when they're asleep and it's easy-peasy. My cats give me a harder time about clipping their nails!

  • I've been using cuticle clippers and they work great.  Easy to control and see, perfect size, not too sharp.  I also wait til she's asleep or nursing to do it.

  • I've used nail cutters on both LOs since they were born. Those suckers grow fast so I cut nails like every other day.
  • I've been clipping my LO nails for about 2 months. I just clip them after he eats when he's happy

  • I clip my little guys nails after his bath. He's usually more relaxed.
