Advice for a first timer

After introducing myself on here, I called by OB and she said she wouldn't see me until I was at least 10 weeks.  Since that would put me around the holidays, she said she'd rather wait until January.  Why do some people get blood tests right away to confirm, others get an u/s at 6/7/8 weeks, but I'm stuck waiting until January?  Should I keep taking home tests to make sure it's still real?  Do I just try to forget about the whole thing?  I'm an emotional wreck, so I'm sorry if this is an irrational post.  I'm just really confused and I really want to know for sure.  :(

Re: Advice for a first timer

  • 9/10 weeks is pretty standard for a first appt, usually they only see you earlier if you have a history of m/c or as the receptionist at my office put it, 'particularly anxious'.  :)

Yes it was planned, yes we know what causes that, no we are not on public assistance, and yes we will be getting cable after this. ;)

  • I would say 8 weeks is the average.  By the time I saw my OB with my first, they confirmed with a vaginal U/S.  If you think anything is wrong - bleeding, heavy cramping, etc - call and they likely will see you sooner.  Otherwise, just try not to think about it.  It's not irrational.  I think everyone is eager to get in to see the OB.  I wouldn't keep taking tests, or at least I'd try not to.  Just try to relax and wait until January.

  • I can totally relate to you- I am an emotional wreck! I know I am pregnant because I took like 4 tests all digital and all positive, but I am just excited and anxious for my first appointment- which is December 21.   so lets try and work together and RELAX!!  its so hard!! but hope you have a healthy pregnancy!! <3

  • every office is different, my first doctor didn't do bloodwork they just had you come in for an u/s between 8-10 weeks. The doctor I see now sent me for bloodwork(because I requested it after my first loss) and they do the u/s around 8 weeks, I have my appt just shy of 8 weeks this time. I think most doctors wait to see you and have the u/s sound because you can't always see/hear the baby/hb around 5-6 weeks

     this.

I was seen at 10 weeks my first time too.

  • There's no way I would wait until January and this isn't my first! I need to hear that heartbeat! :)

  • I know it's hard, but try to relax.

Appointments at 4-6 weeks are generally to confirm pregnancy, sometimes this is done routinely, sometimes just for high risk individuals. Beta levels (used to confirm) can sometimes indicate a pregnancy that might not be viable, but sometimes it gives a false result, ending in unnecessary worrying (particularly if you are not high risk).

The heartbeat also can be difficult to hear at 7-8 weeks, which is why some wait until 10 weeks when it should be heard. Again, going at weeks 8 weeks and to not hear a heartbeat can cause unnecessary worrying when you could have a totally healthy baby in there.

I guess what I'm saying is consider it this way: A later appointment means less chance for unnecessary worrying.

Just make sure you take good care of yourself in the meantime, and read up on what is and isn't normal. If something doesn't seem right, don't hesitate to give your BOB a call. They will likely see you if you're experiencing something abnormal. But consider all normal things a good sign :)

     Good luck to you!

  • 10 weeks is standard.  That is what I waited with my first.  This time I'm having blood test and an early ultrasound because I had a miscarriage last month.

Waiting sucks though!  But like others have said it is hard to hear a heartbeat before that anyway.  GL!

  • My first OB didn't see me until 8/9 weeks and there was no u/s.  They did confirm with a blood test.  My new OB sees everyone at 6/7 weeks and does an u/s.  They do not confirm with a blood test.  Every OB is different.

If you've had + HPT's you are pregnant.  Continuing to POAS will just drive you crazy (I know it would with me).  Step away from the HPT's, relax and try to enjoy.  I know, easier said than done!

UPDATE - my new OB just called to schedule my first appt and now they aren't doing them until 8 weeks.  So every OB is different and they can even change their policies within a couple of months!

  • My first appointment is scheduled for right around 8 weeks on December 21.  I'm anxious too but try and keep busy.  Easier said than done, I know.

  • I've got an appt next week (5 weeks) but they said it was mostly paperwork.  Im high risk - since i just had the LEEP this summer - but i'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.  I think they just want to see the BFP for themselves and get a medical history of my DH & I (and charge me my $30 copay).

    This.

With my first I didn't see my doctor until 10 weeks. With this baby, I'll be seeing my new doctor at 6 1/2 weeks.

  • I can relate. This is my first PG. I called and the earliest the would see me was 12/27. Well, I haven't even touched my deductible this year, so I had it moved to 1/3. Might as well, only a few days later, save over $300 and I get to use my 2013 FSA to cover my portion.

If they could have/would have seen me before Christmas, I would have preferred that, but they only see you after 9 weeks. They also do an U/S. So I am nervous and excited. I keep trying to relax, but it is hard.

  • I was freaking out a bit too... my first pregnancy, and my first appt isn't until January 15, when I will be 11 weeks! But as someone mentioned, I'd rather not worry unnecessarily if I have an early appt and there is no heartbeat yet...

Woooowwwwww....I am cracking up over here! I assume you mean OB, the only thing I've heard BOB used as online is for Battery Operated Boyfriend(aka a vibrator)! That would for SURE help her relax, but pretty sure that's the most awesome typo ever! ;)

  • There's nothing for your doctor to do. A blood test doesn't make you more pregnant than a pee test. The only reason to be sure to get in before 10 weeks if if you want to set up a NT scan (I think that has to be between 11 and 13 weeks to be effective).

I'll go in after Christmas, at 9 or 10 weeks. No u/s, but I guess they confirm by either blood or pee with the first big lab run.

  • I would push back on that.  We are almost certainly doing a CVS again, which has to be performed between 10 and 12 weeks. Our insurance requires genetic counseling before the CVS and there is lead time needed to schedule the procedure all after the initial OB appointment. 10 weeks is too late to make that happen.

You are in for a new world with pregnancy. BOB will soon be all about jogging strollers ;-)
  • Blood tests are for those who are high risk or have had a history of miscarriage.  The 6-7 week appt with U/S is usually for those who don't know how far along, have not have normal periods etc so the doctor can properly gauge how far along the pregnancy is.  The 10 week, 1st appointment is just your standard....just take your pregnancy day by day.  If you had positive tests then it is real.  Try to look forward to your appointment and hearing the babies heart beat.  So amazing.  Hang in there.

  • I so know what you mean...I found out close to a week ago at 4 weeks, and when I called my OB they didn't schedule anything until 8 weeks. Even then the visit is with a nurse counselor. I don't see the actual doctor until 10. As a first timer, I have A LOT of questions that I wish I could get professional answers for earlier. But what's more troubling to me right now is not having a confirmation of the home pregnancy test results; it's SO unnerving to base things at this point on a $4 plastic pee stick, especially when at this point I have few if any symptoms to remind me that "yes, this is real, there really were 2 pink lines..."
