My son is 8. There are a good handful of Wii games that are interesting and challenging enough to captivate a school aged kid, but still not too violent or scary.

Super Paper Mario (there's also a sequel to this now)
Okami (says T rated, but pretty tame. The characters drink saki at a festival, you get a major character drunk on saki to defeat him, and there's innuendo about one character having big boobs.)
Mario Kart
Lego Star Wars, Lego Indiana Jones, etc.
Pikmin
Non video game toys: my son likes pretty much anything Lego, still likes Imaginext (fisher price) playsets, playmobil, remote control vehicles, etc.
