Preemies

Umbilical hernia

I noticed one on ds2 several days ago. I have our 2 month well visit Friday, but I wondered what your personal experiences were. It makes my heart hurt that he might have to have surgery.

Re: Umbilical hernia

  • Thanks. I'm more familiar with the adult kind, which usually need repairing. You bet I'm hoping it'll go away!

  • My DS has a pretty large one as well that went away on its own somewhere between 4-5 months actual.  We pushed it back in every now and then to make sure it was still was able to be reduced.  We even had a consult with a surgeon for his inguinal hernia (which also went away on it's own which is pretty rare) and the surgeon said she wouldn't do anything about the umbilical hernia unless it hadn't resolved by the age of 2.

  • DD has a small one. Both our pedi and neonatologist said its common for preemies and usually corrects itself. The pedi said to only be concerned if I can't push it back in. So every once in a while I check it.

  • My DS had both an umbilical hernia and double inguinal hernias. The inguinal hernias needed to be repaired, so we opted to also have the umbilical repaired in the OR all at one time. The umbilical hernia was nice size, but we were also told it would close on its own by yr1. The surgery lasted about 3.5 hrs for both they ended up with some trouble on the inguinal repair. We stayed 1night post op. I would say that there was a period of about 2days where DS was fussy uncomfortable, but after that, he was back to his self. The scars the umbilical one is probably 2/3" long are barely visible now. Good luck to you your little one! Hope this helps some.

  • DS had one and it was not cute... I was worried he would need surgery too but it went away on its own within 2 months.  He now has an adorable little belly button on his fat belly.  Your doctor will probably monitor it. Personally I took pictures of it every now and then to compare it myself.  I noticed it got bigger before it got smaller.  Also his was never painful and we could push it in ... with a gross squishy sound that I hated. Hopefully your son's goes away quickly!!

  • Missgooseyface rednelson hit the nail on the head with what we were told. DD has one that stuck out almost 2 inches, her pedi and developmental specialist said unless it becomes hard or hasn't resolved itself by age 3 she won't have to have surgery to repair it. She's 5 mos actual now and its almost flush with her tummy and getting smaller, just looks line she has a little outie now.

  • DD had a big one, but as others have said, our pedi said it's only a problem if you can't push it back in. So every time I did a diaper change I just squished it a few times. She said if it hadn't self-corrected by the time DD was 2 that she would need a little bitty surgery, but it was gone by the time DD was maybe 8 months old? I don't remember now, honestly. It's a pretty typical preemie thing, but generally nothing to worry about!

  • Our LO had one.  I was worried at first but everyone reassured me that it would be fine.  By about 2 1/2 months actual age it was disappearing.  She is on my lap now and I can see her perfect little inny belly button because she has ruched her little sleeper gown up.
