Carseat tip for babies who hate em

So my LO hates being in the carseat, after about 5 minutes she'll start screaming and work herself into a sweat. Well...my SIL gave me this

https://www.amazon.com/Infantino-206-207-Car-Seat-Buddies/dp/B0040GJ0UQ/ref=sr_1_7?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1354249474&sr=1-7&keywords=car+seat+toys

(sorry not clicky-one of these days I'll learn how Wink)

its a toy that slips on the carseat and my LO loves it. When you touch the puppies nose it sings and lights up and all the toys swing around and because its right in front of baby she can actually reach it. She is now fine (most of the time) when riding in the car

Btw, Im fully aware that after market items on the carseat are not crash tested and therefore not proven safe, but I feel like this will not cause bodily harm to my daughter and is worth its weight in gold if it prevents my daughter from screaming everytime we get in the car

My problem with these toys is that you are supposed to flip the car seat handle back behind the seat when in the car. The only way this toy would work is if the handle was up and that's not recommended.

Yeah I never put the handle back...what's the risk? I might start putting it back if I knew the risk...

  • When I went to have my car seat installed at my local approved place (EMS) they told me because baby can be ejected in accident and could hit the bar and cause bodily harm. Normally I follow the rules pretty closely but....this one, not so much. If LO is ejected from carseat in crash then anything she hits will cause bodily harm.

Depends on the car seat model. My graco recommends handle in middle. So every seat is different.

The risk is if it says in manual to do it, do it! They ar attested for safety so most when impacted will cushion the crash. As I said in a above comment though, read instructions as I know my car seat a GRaco says leave in middle not back. My cousins and previous car seats, all graco, say move back. So read Manual.

op: I just put music on my iPod and play it for dd when we drive.

  • My understanding for putting it back is that they're designed with some give, so let's say you have a front impact. You as a forward facing person would shove back into your chair. The car seat would also do that except since your baby is rear facing the seats provides give allowing it to go with the flow of motion. If you have the handle up, it has the possibility of hitting the back seat. Objects in motion stay in motion unless an opposing force is applied, so your car seat would stop moving but your baby would still continue to move and then be stopped by straps very harshly. If handle was down, then seat would be able to continue moving fluidly as designed.

Edited to add that if your manual says otherwise then it means it's designed differently to handle that, so follow what it says.

  • Back in the day, a nurse at my work said she used to just sit her kids, even when they were a month old, on her lap. That's how you did it then. By the time our kids have kids, technology will have evolved so much that the car seats we are using now will be forbidden, I'm sure.

We use the BundleMe in the car seat. I didn't cut out the back of it...it's a 50 dollar item. He loves it, it keeps him so warm, and a car seat cover wouldn't insulate the heat as well. Do what works for you.

  • I agree with anbeck. We use the mirror which can get dislodged and hit the baby etc, and her head moved so much when she was first born that we had to put those earmuff looking things on her carseat to keep her head stable.

When she's screaming it's hard to completely focus on the road, so anything that helps keep her happy is keeping her safer IMO.

LOL I'm not sure of the risk! I just do it b/c that's what the instructions say and what I've always seen/heard. That being said, if DH forgets to put it back, I'm not worried about it.

see, the instructions on my Britax B-Safe say the handle can be in any of the 3 locked positions. I checked my manual over and over to be sure, because with the handle back it's a very tight fit in my small car. It even says it on the seat itself. I also thought it had to be back, but nope.

Sure, do what works for you, but I hope you know that you are going against what the car seat manual says.  Using aftermarket products with your car seat voids any warranty. If your child gets injured, don't go running to BundleMe or your car seat manufacturer.

  • I have a toy similar to this, but I don't use it in the car. I use it when we are shopping to keep him occupied, and it is FANTASTIC!
