After introducing myself on here, I called by OB and she said she wouldn't see me until I was at least 10 weeks. Since that would put me around the holidays, she said she'd rather wait until January. Why do some people get blood tests right away to confirm, others get an u/s at 6/7/8 weeks, but I'm stuck waiting until January? Should I keep taking home tests to make sure it's still real? Do I just try to forget about the whole thing? I'm an emotional wreck, so I'm sorry if this is an irrational post. I'm just really confused and I really want to know for sure.
Re: Advice for a first timer
this.
I was seen at 10 weeks my first time too.
I know it's hard, but try to relax.
Appointments at 4-6 weeks are generally to confirm pregnancy, sometimes this is done routinely, sometimes just for high risk individuals. Beta levels (used to confirm) can sometimes indicate a pregnancy that might not be viable, but sometimes it gives a false result, ending in unnecessary worrying (particularly if you are not high risk).
The heartbeat also can be difficult to hear at 7-8 weeks, which is why some wait until 10 weeks when it should be heard. Again, going at weeks 8 weeks and to not hear a heartbeat can cause unnecessary worrying when you could have a totally healthy baby in there.
I guess what I'm saying is consider it this way: A later appointment means less chance for unnecessary worrying.
Just make sure you take good care of yourself in the meantime, and read up on what is and isn't normal. If something doesn't seem right, don't hesitate to give your BOB a call. They will likely see you if you're experiencing something abnormal. But consider all normal things a good sign
Good luck to you!
10 weeks is standard. That is what I waited with my first. This time I'm having blood test and an early ultrasound because I had a miscarriage last month.
Waiting sucks though! But like others have said it is hard to hear a heartbeat before that anyway. GL!
My first OB didn't see me until 8/9 weeks and there was no u/s. They did confirm with a blood test. My new OB sees everyone at 6/7 weeks and does an u/s. They do not confirm with a blood test. Every OB is different.
If you've had + HPT's you are pregnant. Continuing to POAS will just drive you crazy (I know it would with me). Step away from the HPT's, relax and try to enjoy. I know, easier said than done!
UPDATE - my new OB just called to schedule my first appt and now they aren't doing them until 8 weeks. So every OB is different and they can even change their policies within a couple of months!
My first appointment is scheduled for right around 8 weeks on December 21. I'm anxious too but try and keep busy. Easier said than done, I know.
This.
With my first I didn't see my doctor until 10 weeks. With this baby, I'll be seeing my new doctor at 6 1/2 weeks.
I can relate. This is my first PG. I called and the earliest the would see me was 12/27. Well, I haven't even touched my deductible this year, so I had it moved to 1/3. Might as well, only a few days later, save over $300 and I get to use my 2013 FSA to cover my portion.
If they could have/would have seen me before Christmas, I would have preferred that, but they only see you after 9 weeks. They also do an U/S. So I am nervous and excited. I keep trying to relax, but it is hard.
When you've been married this long, you need a ticker to remind you.

Woooowwwwww....I am cracking up over here! I assume you mean OB, the only thing I've heard BOB used as online is for Battery Operated Boyfriend(aka a vibrator)! That would for SURE help her relax, but pretty sure that's the most awesome typo ever!
There's nothing for your doctor to do. A blood test doesn't make you more pregnant than a pee test. The only reason to be sure to get in before 10 weeks if if you want to set up a NT scan (I think that has to be between 11 and 13 weeks to be effective).
I'll go in after Christmas, at 9 or 10 weeks. No u/s, but I guess they confirm by either blood or pee with the first big lab run.

I would push back on that. We are almost certainly doing a CVS again, which has to be performed between 10 and 12 weeks. Our insurance requires genetic counseling before the CVS and there is lead time needed to schedule the procedure all after the initial OB appointment. 10 weeks is too late to make that happen.
