Baby Names

Millie

Can this be used as a full name?  I've always liked it as a nn for Amelia, but DH apparently had a rabbit named Emilia when he was younger and that's too similar for him.  Anyway, do you think we could still use Millie?

  • There are other names you could have Millie as a nn for. Mildred, Camilla/Camille, Melinda, Melissa, even Emily.

  • I would use it as a first name.
  • I prefer the spelling Miley.

I think it's a pretty name, but now days I associate it with Miley Cyrus. That probably won't be a problem once your kid is older though :)

  • I can't see Millie as a stand alone name. I really like Camille with the nn Millie.

  • I love it as a NN for Millicent. I think it is a little too juvenile for a stand alone name.

They are not the same name. Millie is pronounced Mill-ee, and Miley is pronounced My-lee. Also Miley was a made up name. They called her "Smiley" when she was small, and she couldn't say it properly so said "Miley", and it stuck (It makes me sad that I know these things).

All that being said, I love Millie. I think it works as a NN for all sorts of names, but my favourites are Millicent and Camilla.

  • I know someone whose name is Millagros, but goes by Millie.

I personally am not a big stickler about formal names. I think Millie is cute and if I really liked it I would use it as a fn

OP is talking about Millie.  It's pronounced Mil-lee.  Not My-lee like Miley.

I really like Millie but prefer a longer name option.  We considered Amelia, Emilia and Millicent.  I thought we were settled on Millicent, after DH's grandmother, but the other night he scrapped it.  Other people usually suggest Camilla and Mildred too, but neither one of them do a thing for me.

  • I think it's a nice name that doesn't seem too juvenile as the girl gets older. Also, lots of people have been using nick names as "real" names lately, so I don't think it's a big deal to use Millie instead of a longer formal name.

  • I love Millie as a nickname for Camilla or Camille!!

I wouldn't personally use it as a standalone name, but that's because I don't like those types of names as standalone names. There's nothing wrong with it though - on someone else's kid, I would think it was cute!

Miley might be a made up name for them but it is a legit name. My youngest daughter is Miley and she has her great great grandfathers name. So it is a name that has been around of a long time.

I hate the association with Miley Cyrus but am confident she will crash and burn before my daughter hits school.

OP...Millie reminds me of a millipede.

  • I would personally use it as a standalone name, but I also liked PP suggestion of using it as a nickname for Camille. Millie is on my short list for a future girl, but I know DH won't like it.
