Medicaid not covering epidurals?

A friends mom told me today that when she gave birth, Medicaid did not cover epidurals! I haven't been told anything like this yet, but I feel like it would be one of the things they wait to tell me until I'm in the hospital! I can call and check my policy but I'm going to wait until tomorrow, I feel bad calling those people late.

ANYWAYS. Oh me oh my, I am so nervous now.

Any other ladies on Medicaid and have heard this? I'm sure if differs state to state but I'm curious about it all.

I'm in Texas though if anyone is in the same boat.

  • I would be really surprised if that were true...

  • My mom had one and was on Medicaid. My brother is 6 so not like it was too long ago, I'd be surprised.

  • I think that person was misinformed. I had Medicaid 9 years ago and they covered everything including the epidural, even the tubal ligation I had after the birth(...I had it reversed...obviously).

  • I'm in North Carolina and on Medicaid and my midwife has NEVER said anything about it not covering epidurals. I've signed the consent form and everything already. It would probably be similar to denying you pain medication for a serious injury. Sure, it's selective, but still.

Even if it weren't covered, that's a bill I would most certainly be willing to pay! haha.

  • Im in NC and currently enrolled in Medicaid.  When I was in labor with DD I got the epidural and it was covered.  I have not received any sort of documentation stating that this has changed.  You can always call your case worker and ask them, but I would seriously doubt it's not covered.

  • Our medicaid in Vermont has covered it for a long time, and they still do. Even my other insurance that does not cover much covers that too.
