Hi ladies,

i am thinking of birth control for after i have the baby and i was considering mirena. any of you ladies have been on this or considering it? thanks

what are the side affects, benefits etc.

Thanks Ladies

Re: Mirena?

  • The only side effect I had was not getting a period...and that's not a complaint! My tubes are tied now, but my periods are so painful now my doctor recommended that I have it put back in.

  • I had it and loved it. Four years of consistent, but very light periods and very minimal cramping/aching with menses.

I plan to get one again after baby arrives.

  • I had it and loved it.  I even was a rare case who had to have it surgically removed and I still loved it.  5 years of no periods and no side effects, plus my insurance covered it 100% so it was cheap!  It also uses a very low dose of hormones so it doesn't affect some women in the same negative way other hormone-based bc can.  I would get it again if we weren't planning on having another in 2-3 years.

  • i had it for almost 5 years before I took it out to get pregnant and I LOVED it! Will deff get it put back in after I have this baby! I have nothing but great things to say about it!

  • I had it for a year, and hated it.

terrible cramping to the point my legs went numb... Periods for 3 weeks straight, with four days in between.

However, I'd get it again, loved not having to worry about taking a pill everyday! They say they can be more comfortable after having a pregnancy.

  • My husband's niece got pregnant while on it and then was considered high risk her whole pregnancy because of it!  I am hoping that's a rare occurence because I would like to go on it after this baby.

  • I had it placed at 9 weeks postpartum (while bf'ing) and never got a period back until I removed it.  I absolutely LOVED it!  I would consider it again, but want something more permanent this time as I'm SURE I'm done at 2 kids.

The only things I noticed that MAY have been the mirena was bad acne and lack of sex drive.  However, I can't be sure it was the mirena or just different hormones.  Acne and low sex drive are possible side effects of mirena, but can also be attributed to being a new mom lol!  :)  My sex drive didn't really increase after I had it removed though, and it wasn't out long enough before I got pregnant again to really tell if it helped my acne or not.  (I was able to keep the acne under control with prescription face wash from a dermatologist while using mirena.)

  • i had it for three years and loved it during the time. my periods completely stopped and i never had to think about bc. however, after having it removed my periods did not come back. it has taken us four years and multiple fertility procedures to get pregnant again. my doctors do believe that the mirena contributed to our fertility issues. our insurance no longer covers mirena at all due to the multiple class action lawsuits against the product and manufacturer. do a lot of research on the product before you make a decision - there is good and bad to every birth control method and everyone's body reacts differently. my experience is mild compared to some that I have heard.

  • Loved mine at first - it was great to simply have it put in and forget about BC. My periods didn't really change for the first eight months - until suddenly they got WAY heavier then stopped completely. Well, turns out they got heavier because it fell out, and they stopped because I was pregnant. Whoops.

The same thing happened to my best friend, except hers just dropped into her cervix. She got pregnant while it was out of place (I guess if it's not exactly where it should be it won't work), so she had to have it removed, which caused a big increased risk of miscarriage. (Luckily her healthy baby arrived a couple of months ago!)

Other than the whole "it doesn't seem to work" thing, I had zero complaints at all... But that's a big complaint, considering keeping me from getting pregnant was the ONE reason I had it put it... :)

(Confession: I found out my best friend got pregnant with hers in right before I was due to have mine put in. DH and I decided that "lightning doesn't strike the same place twice", and we figured we'd be fine... Yeah, notsomuch! Good to know we're so skilled at beating the odds though, right???)

  • For me, unfortunately it was a nightmare.  I used to get migraines MAYBE once a year, after Mirena I had them at least twice a month.  I also got terrible cramps that radiated into my legs, and then my hair started thinning at a terrifying rate. I also lost my sex drive quite a bit.  It took me a while to put it together that it could be the Mirena, but I eventually realized all these happened within the first year of having it.  I had it removed and the headaches stopped, my sex drive returned and my hair stopped falling out...although it never came back so it's still very thin.

I know many people love it, but for me it was horrible.  I also know someone that got pregnant on it and they didn't remove it because they were too worried about mc. Turned out she mc anyway, but that was scary to me.  Just do your research before you decide.
