What are the odds that I will reuse my 1st LOs convertible car seat? I plan on all my kids being 2-4 yrs apart (2-3 if possible). DH is fighting me NOT to get a girly themed car seat for Hayley so we can reuse it. I'm trying to explain to him that by the time she'd grow out of it - the next one would have their own anyway, and that the 3rd or 4th kid may use it - but that's IF it's not worth getting a new one for them because of expiration and such...
I guess what I really want to know is, how old are kids generally when they hit 40 pounds, 50 pounds, and 65?
Her infant seat is the ugliest green and grey - I REALLY want to give her pink/purple this time around. I HATE that green! haha!
Re: Mamas with more than 1 kiddo...
My 3y2mo daughter is about 35 pounds and very average size for her age.
We were planning on having several kids when it was just her and got all our big stuff in neutral colors. I'm really glad we did because we're reusing everything, including car seats. We didn't get convertibles, though, so I don't know how long they stay in them.
It really depends on the size of your LO. Logan hit 40lbs when he turned 3, but he is in the 95th% for everything. 2 years and 4 years makes a huge difference. If you have them 2 years apart I would say you will need to buy the new LO a convertible before your first LO grows out of it. But, if you have them 4 years apart your first LO definitely might be 40lbs.
Then again you have a girl so your chances of her being 40lbs by the time she is 4 are lower. You are probably safe to get the pink.
ALSO.... tell your DH you can get a new cover for the car seat if worse comes to worse. We paid $60 for a new cover for Kellen so he would have a nice new car seat when it was passed down.
My vote is go with gender neutral. What we found is that now that DS is 3.5, instead of buying DD new convertible seats and keeping DS in his convertible seats, we bought DS a 5 point harness booster thingy (Britax Frontier) that will be his last seat forever. The Britax Frontier is cheaper than most of the Britax convertible seats, so economically, it made more sense to put him in one of those rather than buying DD another/more expensive convertible, and at 3.5, they are just as safe as the convertible seats. He likes it better too. It has cup holders and allows him to sit up a little straighter and get in and out of his seat himself (huge plus for mom and dad!). The convertible seats have higher sides, so it's much harder for them to get in and out of them themselves.
DS is 40+ lbs right now, so I think we would have had a while before he outgrew his convertible seats (70 lbs), but now we don't have to worry about it because the Frontier goes to like 100lbs or something. In a couple years, when he is old enough to go just a booster, we will buy a cheap booster (they're like $30) and give DD the Frontiers.
This is exactly what we did to the T. Lol!
It's one thing to have a bright pink infant carrier for a boy because people will actually see you carrying him around in it and assume he's a girl. But nobody sees the carseat that stays in your car right?
Disclaimer: I do not have more than one child!
DH and I talked about this and figured that we would be good with a "girly" print for the convertible seat because it is going to last a long time and we are getting the ones that are 3-in-1 and go up to 100 lbs (at least his is!). So odds are we will need another one anyway.
Also, consider the expiration for safety...if they are 4 years apart and it expires in 6 you will only get 2 more years out of it with baby #2 so you may have to end up with a new one anyway.
