Feeding solids

I feel like I'm not giving cooper the healthiest solids and I feel bad. He usually eats what we do for dinner we are far from super healthy eaters or a gerber toddler meal. We have almost completely stopped pured foods except for at the sitters. Just trying to use what we have left. Any suggestions for easy healthy meals? Anyone else as lazy as me and feeding the gerber meals?

Re: Feeding solids

  • I just keep lots of fruits and veggies around, frozen or fresh. I think because of his teeth, Paul seems to like frozen veggies (green beans, corn, mixed veggies) to gnaw on. Over the weekend I cook up a chicken breast, cube it up and keep it on hand. Then I can just chunk some up and give it to him during the week if what we are eating is not "okay" for him.

  • It may be worth looking at other brands.  I stay away from Gerber after reading the labels.  There are a ton of chemicals listed in the cintents. Maybe you could find a more natural similar brand?

When I am not feeling it I make DD an egg and toast and banana.  It covers her food groupa ans takes next to no time to prepare. I also keep some cooked pasta n the fridge so I can toss it in a frying pan with tomatos and other veggies/whatever I find in the fridge, and she loves it!

I find trying to figure out an easy protein to be the most difficult.

  • Laura gets what we're having. We have tried giving her separate food, but she sees that hers is different and throws a fit until she gets what we have. As a result, I try to make sure we have at least one veggie at dinner, and that everything is relativey healthy. It doesn't always happen, though, and I'm not worried. That's life. Laura will not always be presented with the healthiest options, as a child or as an adult. I want her to know that that's ok in moderation, so she doesn't go bananas with it when she gets older.

  • I give JB what we have as well. When it is something that I'm not comfortable giving him I try to give him a "prepared meal" that I made in bulk earlier. I like to make soup that I can portion and heat up or I will make couscous mixed with veggies and chicken, things like that. It's cheap to make a large amount, and it will last maybe 5 days depending on what it is.

Also if we are making chicken with something inappropriate on it I will make part of the meal "plain" while making the rest of our meal how we like it.

  • Give yourself some credit! Your child is growing and doing well. So they don't eat all organic vegan diet or the finest cuts of beef. My mother raise us on tuna noodle caserole, tacos and fish sticks and I am healthy. I do try to eat one protien, 2 veg and either dairy or wheat every meal but sometimes it comes in canned form or jars. Alexander eats eggs or oatmeal or a banana for breakfast. He has some sort of veggie lunch such as carrots and peas and pita bread. Then for dinner it is what we eat so yesterday it was roasted potatoes and pork tenerloin and toay it will be southwest salad (no spicey dressing for him) and pulle pork pieces. Not hte healthiest I know but it is rather healthy. Those gerber meals are made to help you out. Feeding store bought food such as gerber meals are great because then he gets some nutrition.
  • Try the Beechnut. My doctor recommended it over Gerber.  Beechnut is a more wholesome baby food without the chemical and filler. Lucas does like the Gerber yogurts though.
