Our son will turn 3 in February and is completely fascinated with trains. We wanted to get him a working model train set that was age appropriate for Christmas. Any one have any experiance or suggestions?
We have a battery operated train set, but both LO's prefer to play with wooden train sets whenever they get the chance (children's museum, TRU, friends house). So they are getting a train table for Christmas. Like PP said I like that it encourages pretent play and more imagination.

I have a 2 & 3 year old and they have both the wooden sets and also a Lionel O Scale set. Obviously the Lionel is much more expensive and you need to be able to trust your kids with it- mine are not rough on toys so it wasn't a big deal for us to get it for them. They love both of them- however, they play more with their wooden sets because its less expensive to expand on it (we change the tracks about every other week) and they like to reenact their story books. Buying tracks for an O scale train is very expensive and so are other accessories so we can't change it up very often- but they love running it, blowing the wistle and watching the smoke go out the funnel.
I would stick with the child powered trains at 3 years old. My 2 and 4 year old spend hours playing with their trains. We have the wooden Thomas track, engines and destinations. We started with a train table but they wanted bigger and more complex layouts. Now we just have it set up on the hardwood floor.
I would stick w/ the wooden ones if you don't have them also...
My DS loves all his thomas/wooden trains & train table but last xmas a few friends had the motorized kind under their trees... they come off the tracks very easily & some of them are NOT easy to put back on & put the cars back together, even for me, and DS was knocking them off constantly. This year he has been asking for us to get a train for under the tree & I don't really know what to do (he was 3 in august) b/c I am pretty sure he will still not really be able to work it very well & we will all get frustrated w/ it so I don't think I'm going to get one yet unless I can find one that really stays on the track well.
If you want a remote control train, Fisher Price makes Geotrax. Some of the trains have remotes and my 4.5 year old has been playing with them since he was 2.5. However, like the PP, the wooden trains get played with the most.

DS has been crazy about trains since he was a little over a year old. He has a ton of wooden ones, the table, tracks etc and they get played with constantly. He has a few that *could* be motorized if we had ever put batteries in them but we haven't and he doesn't know the difference. He saw one of the Christmas trains last week at home depot and was in awe but it is certainly not 3-year-old friendly. Instead, he's getting a duplo train set since he's recently discovered duplo blocks. It was on sale for $74.99 last weekend. It is motorized and I guess this time we'll add the batteries
