TTC After a Loss

wait ... is m/c a genetic issue?

My sister has had 5 m/c and mentioned that we may have a family problem. I have always understood that fertility is not inherited so I was surprised when she suggested the m/c could be. Thoughts?

Re: wait ... is m/c a genetic issue?

  • It depends on your specific situation and the cause of your m/c. When I met with my Dr. I told him that my mom had experienced a lot of losses and he said that I didn't have to worry about it being related because it is usually not genetic. But then he remembered who my mom was because he saw her when she was having all of her problems and his exact words were "well that makes things more interesting" which was super unsettling. But the reason why was because my mom had a lot of m/c as the result of a flipped chromosome and that means there is a 50% chance I will have that problem. So it really depends on your family history and situation. But I believe in most cases, and I could be wrong here, dr. don't rule it as something you "inherit". HTH.

  • As PP says, it depends. One way to think of it is miscarriage can possibly be a "symptom" of a genetic issue. Certain causes of repetitive miscarriages are genetics traits, like a balanced translocation or an inherited blood clotting issue.

  • Short answer: it depends.  Was a cause for your sister's MCs identified?

  • Agreed, it depends. My mom had 2 losses one resulting in an ambulance and hospital stay. My doctor said that her issues have no effect on me.

  • I sure hope this isn't true. After my miscarriage, I asked the Dr. If it could be hereditary considering before me my mother had 3 miscarriages and one still birth horrible horrible experience for her. According to my Dr. It isn't....lets just hope she is right.

  • All mc are different and unless your sis' doc says it is, it most likely isn't. Mention it to your doc they will be able to identify what could be genetic and what is entirely situational.
