Those whose LO's Stopped BF

Title: Those whose LO's Stopped BF

Just wanted to share my experience to encourage you if you are still trying:

Patrick was born 9/10. He latched in that first hour after my c-section. That night he was admitted to the NICU, placed on oxygen and an IV was inserted. I tried for two days to get him to nurse before the nurse practitioner said we needed to use a bottle to feed him since he wouldn't latch without screaming. I pumped every 3 hours around the clock for 3 weeks. I met with a dozen different nurses and lactation consultants before resigning to EP. I offered the breast every day at first and slowly just couldn't take the screaming anymore. At 8 weeks I was frustrated with pumping and trying to calm my baby during pumping. One morning, while his bottle was warming, I figured I would give breastfeeding a try one more time and he latched. I was so relieved. After 8 weeks, when I was struggling and about ready to give up, he latched and we have breastfed ever since.

I am not trying to push breastfeeding. Do what's right for you, but I just want to let you know that even if LO becomes used to the bottle, he can still come back to the breast.

  • I would also l like to share that we went from EPing due to her being inefficient at BFing and not maintaining her weight, to EBFing. I just kept trying an she recently outgrew whatever her issue was, which is exactly what our LC predicted might happen. EPing is totally fine, of course, but it was difficult to keep up with her she's a big girl and I wasn't ready to give up on the ease of being able to just whip out the boob whenever she's hungry. I do still have to supplement with one or two formula bottles a day, and I pump once or twice a day since she sleeps from about 6pm to 6am with one MOTN feeding, but we are both happier now!

After 22 cycles and 4 failed IUIs, Serafina joined our family through IVF/ICSI, born 8.28.12
Our surprise baby, Juliette, is due 12.8.14!

  • We had the same thing happen but we still struggle with her refusing me at times. It's frustrating but I have made it a lot longer than I thought I would. BFing is hard and emotionally draining but rewarding at the same time.
