has anyone made a salt dough ornament?

I've found found several recipes through google which are all pretty much the same. However, some reviews said that the handprint or whatever they made rose in the middle. Anyone care to share their experiences? And do you think I could do mine in the toaster oven?

Re: has anyone made a salt dough ornament?

  • I made one this year (with my cousins and their kids as a craft at Thanksgiving). We painted ours, so I don't know about the handprint issue. (I put Aria's footprint on it in paint)

I would bake it in the oven. I just don't think I'd trust the toaster oven to really make it set.

  • I made them. One of them rose in the middle. Not sure how it will hold up. And despite being in the oven nearly five hours, some of them are still soft in places. I have been letting them air dry for a few days now. I want to paint them, but I think they should be completely hard before I paint. Also, getting the baby to put his hand in the dough without squeezing the dough in his fingers was a challenge!

  • I've not made one, but would it rising have anything to do with there maybe being air pockets?  Maybe make the print, if it's in a container of sorts you could 'tap it down' to get any air pockets out.  That may have nothing to do with it at all...just a thought though.
