Intro to pacifier?

My LO is 3 weeks. BF is established and she is gaining weight. Was wondering when is the recommended time to introduce a pacifier, if at all? She does fine without one by sucking on her hands but I was just wondering incase I decided to give her one.

Re: Intro to pacifier?

  • Depends on who you talk to.  I think the LC/Kelly Mom standard is 4-6 weeks.  We intro'ed one around 3 weeks because LO really likes to comfort suck and my nips were a wreck.  It did cause us some shallow latch issues though, so if I had to do it all again I probably would have waited another week.  I think this is rare though.

Do what feels right to you.  If you are doing ok without one, there's really no reason you have to intro one.

  • I waited until 3 weeks to try to give her one, and she has never really taken it.  Every now and then she'll suck it for a few minutes, but she's just not a paci baby.  I often wonder if it's bc we waited so long to introduce it.

  • I think it really depends on who you talk to, but I would think you are in the clear if breastfeeding has been established and you are comfrotable with the idea. We didn't intro in the hospital (we were at a wonderfully 'pro-breastfeeding' hospital that discouraged it). However, once we got home, my nipples were in such bad shape and LO was such a comfort nurser, I started popping it in at the end of my nursing sessions for a bit after burping. He was probably one week old at the time. He took to it fine and we had a lot of breastfeeding success as well.

  • We did at about a week...we tried before that but she wouldn't take it. I REALLY didn't want a thumb sucker and she was sucking fingers within 24 hours of being born so I preferred her take a paci.

  • She would take it off and on the first couple weeks, but really got attached at 3 weeks.  My MIL actually was the one that got her hooked.  I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do about the paci, but when I was exhausted and needed a break from comfort sucking, we just went with it and I'm glad I did!  It was good for my mental health and I like that someday I can toss the paci rather than having to break the habit of thumb sucking...although she might do that anyway!  My SIL also told me that speech therapists are a big fan of the paci for the first year because it helps strengthen the muscle that help them speak correctly!
  • The LCs at my hospital, the breastfeeding class, and my doctor's office all recommended waiting until 3 weeks, so that's what we did.  He took to it fine.  The first we offered was a Mam, and thank goodness he took that because it's the only type of pacifier he would take!
