How many ounces??

Hey...I EBF, but next week I need to leave LO with my parents in the evenings for a few nights because I have Christmas performances.  I'm going to pump and leave bottles...any suggestions on how many ounces to leave for one feeding?  LO is about 4.5 months, weighs around 17 lbs.

 Thanks!

Re: How many ounces??

  • My LC says 1 ounce an hour, plus a few little snack bottles just in case. If I were gone for 6 hours, I would probably leave two 3 oz bottles and  two 1 ounce bottles.

  • DS took 4 oz at that age but if your LO hasn't ever had a bottle (not sure from your post), they might not take the bottle and hold out waiting for you.  I would leave a 3 oz bottle and then leave a 1 oz or 2 oz extra bottle or bag of milk incase LO is still hungry after the 3 oz.

  • My 4 month old is about 16lbs and he eats 5oz bottles.  But I EP so he's been on bottles for a long time.  If you're EBF, you're LO might eat a little less.  I would probably do at least 4oz at the minimum.  If he doesn't finish it, they can always put it in the fridge and use it next feeding if you don't want them to toss it.

This is exactly what I do when my MIL watches LO while I am at work.  So far it has worked out great.

My LO takes a mix of bottles and breast.  At that age he also took 5 oz and still does.  I agree do at least 4 oz.  The ounce for every hour idea works when they are little but once they are sleeping through the night they have to take more per feeding in order to go 8 to 12 hours without eating.  For example if your LO is going to the breast around 6 times a day that would be around 4.5 ounces per session if the baby is sleeping through the night.

  • Thanks everyone!  I should mention that she has taken a bottle and takes it pretty easily...I'll just be gone longer this time, so I want to make sure I leave enough for her!

    Thanks!
