April 2013 Moms

Have to go back for another U/S...

So my OB's office is seperate than the place that we get our U/S.. my OB told me that they won't contact me about the A/S unless they saw something that concerned them... so my OB office just called and my heart dropped out of my butt.

I have to go back in two weeks for another U/S beacuse the baby was so hyper they couldn't get a good measurement on her heart.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm assuming if it was something they were concerned over, they would tell me right?

  • They probably just want better measurements/pictures so they can give a more accurate opinion.  The ones they got before may not have told them anything (good or bad).  Try not to worry too much, I'm sure everything is fine!

  • I'm sorry your heart fell out of your butt, that must've been painful! ;)

Same thing happened here- my A/S was a little early (long story) and they just want to get a better measurment on a more developed heart. So we are actually going in for our f/up U/S today! So, you are not alone!
  • With DS, we had to go in for a second ultrasound to look specifically at his face; they did not get a good shot of his nose/upper lip the first time.  The nurse assured us that it was just a matter of his positioning the first time - they didn't see anything concerning, just didn't get a good look the first time and wanted to make sure everything was ok.  And he was/is fine.  Think of it as a bonus second chance to see your LO that should be covered by insurance and try not to worry, hard as that is!

  • It probably didn't help that I indulged on a little iced tea before the scan, so the baby was hyper. Mom fail.

Thanks, girls. I hope they're able to get a good measurement this time.... at least I get to see her again!

  • Yes, this just happened to me. They made me come back for better pictures of the brain because she was completely flipped upside down.

Don't worry, it freaked me out too. They just want to make sure they have clear pictures of everything, which is reassuring.

  • No experience, but try not to worry too much. (easier said then done!) They can't determine if there's anything wrong if they can't see it. Chances are everything is fine, but they need to confirm that.

T&Ps to you! I hope you go back and they see a perfect little heart!

I wouldn't assume anything is wrong!  I think it sounds genuinely like they just didn't get a good enough shot to know one way or another.  But with the "we wont' call unless something is wrong" warning, I would have freaked out too.

  • Haha Mirrored- she was so having a dance party in there. I called DH to tell him about the 2nd U/S and he goes "Well maybe if you didn't drink iced tea before the appt she wouldn't have been trying to do Gangnam Style in there." Lol...

Thanks for the reassurance, sometimes my mind likes to think the worst.

  • I have the same thing. baby was just moving too much to get all the measurements they need. Not a big deal, happened with one of my other pg as well. Just an extra look at baby. Also my dr said that the measurements of the heart are easier to get and often more accurate a few weeks later, so that is nice. Just routine, making sure they have all that they need to provide you and baby with the best care!

  • Not a big deal at all! They had a hard time measuring my LO's heart yesterday and he was lying still, just in a bad position. I have to go back at 28 weeks b/c they could not get good spine pics at all b/c he was lying on his back. Many of my friends had the same sort of thing happen, too. Just look at it as a chance to see the baby again.

    Very true! :) Thanks!

  • No need to stress :) I'm sure they would have said something if there was something to be worried about.
    Sometimes positioning is everything.

If it makes you feel better, I have to go back on Monday (two 1/2 weeks after our original scan) for a follow up because our little man curled up in a ball right under my belly button so we hardly got any of the measurements needed.

  • As all the other ladies have said, this is fairly common. I always think about it like this; if they are concerned about something, they usually ask you to come in right away. At least that is how my doctor operates. I'm sure everything will be just fine :)

    Oh good point! Thanks. :)

  • I would think they just need to get her heart measurements if she was moving too much the first time. If it was serious they would probably want you in sooner.

  • I have to go back too on December 21 just to measure her growth due to an abnormal Penta Screen that stressed me out way too much!! Luckily on my first U/S the Doctor and the tech said that Baby Girl is looking perfect but they just want to check up on her growth!! I'm excited to see her again and I'm considering my early Christmas present!!

  • Our tech warned us at the U/S that she couldn't get good pictures/measurments of a lot of things because of the position baby was in so it's very likely we will have to do another one in a few weeks.

I wouldn't stress too much about it (easier said than done!).....they probably just couldn't get a good view and want to be extra cautious.

  • We had to go back a second time because of baby's position since he was so ssquished into my uterus they couldn't see his spine.  My dr said needing a 2nd u/s happens about 20% of the time and not to worry. Everything was great the 2nd time and we got a better profile picture too!

  • With my son we had multiple ultrasounds to try and get pictures of his spine.  With this little one it took a long time to get him to hold still long enough for the tech to get pics of the heart that were good enough.  Everything is probably fine otherwise they would have told you.  Yay you get to see your LO again!
  • I posted about this yesterday! I had the exact same thing happen. Needless to say, I kinda freaked out (over protective FTM 110%).

I've chilled out a little now, done my research and this isn't uncommon.

I see my OB Monday and will likely have to go for another u/s. My goal is not to freak myself out too much until AFTER I get some results back.

Fingers crossed we both just have active little ones who will be much better for the cameras next go around!

This is an excellent point! Thank you! We're in the same boat so these post have been very reassuring. I think it's mostly a cya situation for the tech. I kind of got chided by the midwife because we had our a/s at 18 weeks and she said this happens a lot when moms come in for a/s's before 20 weeks. Who knew?
  • I feel the same as Vaness1229 - If they had really been concerned, they would have asked you to come back right away. Still, I know I probably couldn't help but worry a little if I were in your shoes. I mean, that's a mom's job, right? Hopefully the next 2 weeks fly by and your next u/s brings you nothing but peace of mind.
